Problems with Tamiya Lacquer thinner...

Recently have been spraying my Sherman with Tamiya acrylics using Tamiya yellow topped lacquer thinner....and they spray like a dream. Super smooth finish with no 'grainy' effect that sometimes happened with the Blue topped acrylic alcohol Tamiya thinner.
Today I started to high light the base coat with heavily thinned Tamiya Dark Yellow (10% DY 90% lacquer thinner). It at first was working well as previously but at one point the paint mix i was using started leaving a satin finish...that never dried...not even after using a hair drier...
2 hours later the areas I misted the heavily thinned DY are still satin/gloss.
Any ideas as to why this happened???

TIA
Matthew

Too much thinner?

September 4 2009, 3:29 PM

Paints usually have a balance between the pigments, binders and thinners. 90% lacquer thinner is wayyyyyyy too much thinner. It probably broke the paint down. I spray Tamiya thinned probably 75% paint and 25% lacquer thinner, tops. If I use alcohol or Tamiya acrylic thinner, I thin it 50/50. 90/10 thinner to paint is basically dirty thinner.
