How to simulate smoke (flash) from a main gun firing on AFV.......

Hi guys,

Want to show a main gun firing on an open backed hull down SPG. The barrel will be recoiled, with the crew bracing/holding ears etc. There will be supporting infantry firing away dug in alongside. Anyway whats the best way to simulate the smoke surrounding the muzzle/front of hull. Hope to use a light at the muzzle to represent flash too, with maybe the round suspended in the smoke, like a camera still capturing it.

Any help and ideas much appreciated guys.

Cotton Balls

June 17 2009, 11:56 PM

Glen,

The only way I've ever seen anyone try this in 1/35 scale was to use cotton balls painted with the differenct colors of blacks, browns, yellows and orange. As i recall, some of the cotton balls were stretched/pulled apart to get different densities. The balls were all "centered" on a clear piece of stryene that was pushed down the barrel.

Hi Steve,

Sounds interesting. The clear styrene insert for the barrel in particular would help I think? This idea with the lighting effect from some LEDs would help I think?

Cheers

rather than cotton balls use the stuff they have at

Michaels or other craft stores for pillow stuffing. It holds shape better than cotton and doesn't get stringy

Good idea Harry

I may have to try that.

Some years back, I had to simulate cannon fire from a muzzle loader for a US Civil War dio I was helping my son with. It was 1/86 scale and I used cotton balls pulled apart. Looked good for that scale, but I've never tried it with 1/35. Your idea seems promising.

Hi Harry,

That sounds good too, we haven't got Michaels here but I guess any craft store should have this pillow stuffing material? Is it a more dense material?

Cheers

That microfiber looks exactly like the synthetic pillow stuffing!

You see it holds together better than cotton and its easier to attain a uniform density. color is brighter and more consistant and it doesnt absorb paint and get soggy and glump like cotton either.
