ID?

A bit harder than the ones they used to show in 'Recognition'. My guess is Cent in the first one and Chieftain in the second. Of course the fact that Ossie sent them in helped a good deal!

THis is my current build

October 11 2009, 3:15 PM

hi Chris

This vehicle is what i am about to start building and i want to reproduce it correctly . might just build it before it got hit recently which was how it lost alot of the rotten bins on the left hand side.
it is a Centurion wedge (ARK hull stripped for driver training) with a Chieftain mk2 xy turret on the engine deck . another one witha mk 10 turret on. they are on lulworth Tank range and i want to build it thats why i asked for some help It will need interior as well on the hull and some bits in the turret . i had to get primmission to just photograph it. seems strange i once drove it . Ossie
so here it is

More or less right!

October 12 2009, 4:51 PM

Thanks Ossie. I was more or less right, though I had not considered a range hulk with a different hull and turret! I wish you luck with the build - wat beyond my meagre skills.

Last time I was on Lulworth ranges (on foot, having landed at Worbarrow) was before Chieftains had been invented, so the turret at least could not have been there, though it looks as if the hull might have been!

Railway modellers are sometimes good at this...

October 15 2009, 11:48 PM

...particularly the genre that likes decrepit but picturesque industrial and narrow gauge prototypesI don't know of any really useful online resources unfortunately, but perhaps you'll have better luck with Google than  I did in a few minutes searching

That said  this looks to be an exercise in  textures and I wonder if you need to reverse the weathering process. You could try adding texture to the heavily rusted areas with paint and talcum powder (or try thinned putty stippled with an old brush ); paint the model with several shades of rust and then build up the old paint layers with artists acrylics.  The  hulk seems to be growing lichen and moss as well as rust which migh be well represented by a sprinkling of green poders over tacky varnish

The moth-eaten sheet metal might best be represented with thin plasticard with random holes punshed in  with a hot needle and then enlarges and distressed with a rat tail file - again you may want to texture this as the roughness of the finish seems to be key to getting the right look.

Rotten Metal

October 16 2009, 6:50 PM

Hey Ossie there is a dio in the gallery here called A Modeller's Paradise. Done by Jean Baptiste Verlhac. Has some really well done rotten metal effects on the Famo. Not sure if he comes around here anymore but you might see if you can get in contact with him. Just a thought. HTH

rotten finish

January 7 2010, 6:39 PM

Hi Ossie
looking at your pic, I would suggest using an acid on either brass or aluminium sheet to simulate the holes in the mudguards/flaps, apply sparingly and experiment.
for the large areas of thick flaking paint, I would try paper, after tearing some into small shapes and gluing them onto the hull sometimes in layers and prising the edges up.
Looking forward to seeing the finished effort
regards John Loughman, Bendigo. Australia.
