Cooper-T bolt installation

Just got a Cooper T EZ Pull Bolt in the mail.

Can't for the life of me get the sucker in! Is there supposed to be a spring between the bolt locking ball-bearings? Because they won't budge... and because of this, the bolt will not squeeze into the gun for me.

Any guidance for this lost and confused soul?
