Dumb Sheridan PMI newbi questions

Hello group

Not new to guns but very new to paintball. Have aquired a Sheridan PMI pump. Can anyone tell me how the paint ball is propelled from the barrel.? Also it seems that there should be a spring or something in the magazine to force the paintballs back toward the opening.

I don't feel any air pressure coming out of the barrel after cocking it and squeezing the trigger. it does sound if there is a hammer falling or a sping releasing somewhere.

I know these are probably dumb questions but I don't have an owners manual with it either.
