3m extra cars dent transport policy

BY BEN WEBSTER, TRANSPORT CORRESPONDENT

................In 1950 the average Briton travelled five miles a day. Now it is about 30 miles a day......................

from: http://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/0,,2-2002016082,00.html

And that'll have been by public transport into the city, or bike t'mill.

No wonder it worked then.

And no wonder it can't now.

What is the point of this article anyway?

The total number of cars is irrelevant.

The total number of licensed drivers is a more accurate refelection, as, I think I am correct in saying, you cannot drive two cars at the same time.

The article also mentions that scrapping the fuel duty escalater removed a key element of reducing demand for cars. Rubbish! It made no difference to demand at all. All it did was pull in more money for the treasury.
