The law: I sentence you to L-plates Motorists will soon be able to ‘buy off’ points and time from bans by going back to driving school, reports Julian Rendell

Retraining courses are not a new idea, but this is the first time a national scheme has been planned and it will draw on existing pilot schemes. The idea first surfaced in the North report into road traffic laws in the late 1980s, which spawned two programmes:....

....Both the careless and drink-driving schemes are said to have proved the worth of retraining by cutting reoffending rates and altering driver behaviour.
