5500 people killed by speed traps - UK report

October 05 2003 at 01:41PM

By Les Stephenson

A British motoring association has delivered possibly the most stinging indictment yet of speed-trap cameras with the announcement that 10 years of steadily declining police patrol numbers is to blame for 5 500 road deaths.

The Association of British Drivers says it has analysed government road accident statistics since 1993 and claims the deaths are a direct result of declining broad-based road safety education and police traffic patrols in favour of revenue-generating speed cameras.

It's also an indictment that government-sponsored "road safety" organisations in SA should take very seriously as our road-death toll continues to mount as our own traffic patrols continue to shrink.

Simply, putting municipal revenue above people's lives is a criminal dereliction of responsibility.

There has been a steady decrease in drivers arrested for careless, dangerous or drunken driving
The downward trend in British road deaths that had existed for decades, the figures show, has been almost completely lost.

"Had the former trend (a year-on-year six percent decrease in fatalities) continued about 5 500 people killed on the roads in the last decade would still be alive," the ABD says.

"Drivers who used to look out for hazards now have to split their attention to also concentrate on spotting speed cameras and watching their speedometers."

Meanwhile, the association added, "uninsured, drunk and dangerous drivers now enjoy a greatly reduced chance of being apprehended as traffic police are switched to other duties".

Here again, the ABD cites figures. There has, since 1990, been a steady decrease in the number of drivers arrested for careless, dangerous or drunken driving - from 232 000 in 1990 to only 144 000 in 2000.

'The figures are even worse than we had expected' - BDA
That's a decrease in arrests of 37% in absolute terms but a scary 45% when increased traffic density is factored in and an obvious indication that both unmarked and highly visible mobile policing is badly needed - particularly in SA with its far higher road death toll.........

Camera traps can't spot:

  • Dangerous driving.
  • Drunk driving.
  • Missing head and tail lights.
  • Bald tyres.
  • Unlicensed and therefore uninsured vehicles.
  • Obviously unroadworthy vehicles.

...all of which, I believe, contribute more to road accidents than drivers in modern, high-tech vehicles cruising at 140km/h on open, multi-lane highways.

An ABD spokesman added: "The figures are even worse than we had expected. Regrettably, they are quite clear and undeniable......

These partnerships in Britain operate both the familiar roadside cameras and are made up of police, magistrates and local councils that have always sought to justify speed cameras by claiming they save lives.

"The usual basis for this claim is that the number of accidents in locations where cameras are installed falls immediately after their installation."

However, the ABD pointed out, such partnerships invariably failed to acknowledge is that they place cameras at locations where accident numbers would probably have reduced by a simple process of chance.

"This effect is extremely well understood and is known to statisticians as 'regression to the mean'," the ABD explained.

"This is the tendency for unusually high numbers of crashes to occur from time to time but not to be repeated year in and year out."

ABD chairman Brian Gregory commented: "This makes me so sad and angry. We have been warning for years that speed cameras make the roads more dangerous.

"How many more will have to die before we return to traditional and proven road-safety values based on driving skills, individual responsibility and consideration?

"This speed camera madness must end right now.".....

This next bit seems to have been left out.
I think it important to be included.

    Dicky,
So sorry to learn of your wifes misfortune, I sympathize with you both, but regrettably many more households will suffer the same fate unless the 'Scameraships' alter their approach to the extreme persecution of the motoring public.
    >A lot of modern problems within our community could be made more acceptable by a more realistic approach, coupled with a mature responsible attitude by our Chief CON. and other agencys connected to the 'Scams'.

As for E mailing your MP you may as well urinate into the wind, as your plea's will fall on deaf ears.
He-She and their families are well protected-immune to violence-burglary etc.etc. and are to far out of touch with the real world to have any concern for the people they were elected to represent.

The community cop would probably prefer to sit in his local library-surgery supping tea making attempts to reassure victims of crime that he is genuinely concerned about them.

(A little harsh that last bit, he more than likely do'es care but is frustrated by the fact that his hands are tied by red tape most of the time)

    RE:

    etc.etc.
    How About including,
    .'Drunk Walkers'..........
    >Latest figures just released confirm that...
70% of all pedestrians killed on the roads were "Impaired by Alcohol" and the deaths of pedestrians with more than two and a half times the legal limit of alcohol for drivers in their system have risen by 50% since 1989.
These figures were released today by the RAC Foundation and are based on a study for the Government by the Transport Research Laboratory.
A more than valid argument against the Scameraships who claim that we need Scams because 'SPEED' is the 'MAIN' causation in '*33%*' of 'ALL' fatalities on our roads.!!!
Come back on this one, so called, Road Safety 'EXPERTS'.
*33%* The biggest 'LIE' of all.
    -------------------------------

So its not 'Speeding-or-Drunk/Drivers' who are resonsible for the carnage on the roads its,
    ....'DRUNK WALKERS'....
