Warning on late-night drive dangers

Friday, 10 October, 2003

Late-night clubbers have been caught on CCTV cameras taking a dangerous walk across the top of one of Wales' busiest flyovers.

Two youths were pictured just before 0300 BST last Sunday strolling on the Gabalfa flyover in Cardiff.

The road has no pavements, and cars and taxis can be seen to swerve to avoid them.

The pictures have been released by police to warn of the risks.....

Of stupid, drunk, pedestrians?

To stupid, drunk, pedestrians?

Errrrrrrrrmmmmmmmmm

No:

.......of late-night driving - and to alert motorists that they can just as easily be caught speeding in the early hours.

In one four-hour period, 220 vehicles were captured breaking the 40mph limit on the A470, including one doing 83mph.

"We have stopped people walking along the Butetown tunnel and on the A465 Heads of the Valleys road in the middle of the night," said Sergeant Gary Smart.

"People are a bit inebriated but drivers do have a responsibility to watch out for them"......

What about the pedestrians responsibility?!

Long rant follows about how motorists should take care of pedestrians, especially drunks and those without the sense to wear light clothing, and slow down.

And about how they have "seen" and "recorded" and "caught" (on camera) lots of drivers speeding, including doing "71mph in a 30mph zone" (note "30 zone", not "residential area") and "captured" breaking the 40mph limit on the A470, including one doing 83mph (anyone know anything about the road?).

So that's lots "seen", and "recorded", and "caught" and even "captured".

But not one mention of even one prosecution.

Funny that!

Police Too Busy To Help

October 11 2003, 12:41 AM

By Matthew Taylor And Vicki Shaw

THE policing crisis exposed by the YEP was brought into sharp focus today.

A 91-year-old woman who called officers after her home was besieged by yobs had to wait 36 hours for police to turn up.
And a couple who were ambushed by a gang of teenagers brandishing sticks and baseball bats were told the police were "too busy" to come out.

The horror stories came as it emerged £10m raised by speed cameras in Yorkshire each year is being handed straight to the Treasury – instead of being spent on policing in the county.

The cash – made up of thousands of £60 fines – would be enough to pay for an extra 470 officers on the streets.
But none of it is being spent directly on tackling crime and instead it is being ploughed into installing more camera traps.

Today's revelations follow a YEP investigation which showed that West Yorkshire is being policed by just a few hundred more officers than it was 25 years ago – despite a three-fold increase in crime. We also found that the region now has the lowest number of police per head of population of any comparable force in the country........

......The incidents come after Chief Constable Colin Cramphorn admitted there were "serious questions" about police numbers in West Yorkshire and warned the public that they had to be prepared to pay if they wanted a "first class" service.

Speed camera misery for emergency crews

October 11 2003, 12:44 AM

Oct 10, 2003, 14:50

Ambulance drivers in the West Midlands are being issued with a staggering 3,000 speeding tickets every year after being caught by roadside cameras.

A worker for the ambulance service is being tied up for one day every week in dealing with tickets because speed cameras are unable to distinguish between emergency vehicles and private cars...........

...................

Today's revelation comes in the wake of the case of a driver who was prosecuted while on an emergency call.

Paul Stockbridge, who works for the National Blood Service, yesterday denied speeding as he took vital supplies to the Staffordshire General Hospital.

Mr Stockbridge, of Great Barr, was clocked by Staffordshire Casualty reduction partnership - which is in charge of the region's speed cameras - driving at 41mph through Moss Pit in Stafford, in March.

I had to read this a couple of times as I found it difficult to believe,

> "A worker for the ambulance service is being tied up for one day every week in dealing with tickets because speed cameras are unable to distinguish between emergency vehicles and private cars".

Maybe the 'Robots' (scameras) cannot distinguish emergency vehicles from other vehicles but........
Surely the Human (zombies?) who send out the NIPS can tell, from the a/d to where the tickets are being sent?.(Ambulance-Fire-even 'POLICE'!)
