1,500 Caught In Speeding Swoop

Clarissa Satchell

HUNDREDS of drivers can expect speeding tickets to drop through their letterboxes in the next few days after mobile cameras were set up at new spots in a two-week sweep.

Police used them all over Greater Manchester to target 49 roads and, out of 27,946 drivers checked, 1,566 were speeding......

.......The partnership chose the spots for checks after hearing complaints from residents about speeding on roads which do not qualify for full-time cameras. It says the results prove drivers are putting lives at risk by breaking the speed limits there.

Nope, it proves:

a) When there are complaints from "residents" about speeding:

It's complaints from people who haven't got a clue.

b) Speed doesn't Kill:

Or did they forget to mention that 1,566 people were killed on those 49 roads during that fortnight?!

NEIGHBOURHOOD CONSULTATION

July 18 2004, 3:53 PM

Recently a part of my area was being considered for speed humps, the whole road is sent a letter asking them if they wish them installed. I know one person on that road who doesn't drive and is a bit of a carrot cruncher, when I asked what they thought the reply was "if I had my way I would put bumps everywhere". The consultation ended and I think most voted against bumps although a 20 limit is now in around the school area and beyond.

So, it is very scary when people with no idea about traffic planning or who even drive can have a real effect on the control of traffic, I think the council do this as they know most people will have 'knee jerk' reactions to slowing cars down, it is also a good reason for snobs to have cars diverted from using their street thus creating rat runs.

The truth is this area has had only one or two accidents in the last 20 years although I can't actually remember when the last one was!

'Hazard Removed' From Blackspot

16 August 2004

A £6m renovation scheme has improved a dangerous junction which caused numerous accidents, according to the company which carried out the work.

Speed cameras, which were erected in response to three deaths on the A1 at Stannington, will also be taken down.......

........"But now the engineering work is completed, you can't turn right across the A1 and you don't have to join the A1 from a standing start.

"The hazard to drivers is gone."

When the cameras are removed, the speed limit on the A1 at Stannington - currently 50mph - will revert to the national speed limit.

My emphasis.

So, with engineering improvements, and cameras REMOVED, it's safe to go 40% FASTER!

Well, I never!
