DEATH TOLL ON ROADS HITS
12
Community leaders and residents were stunned after yet another young life was claimed on a Forest road at the weekend.
A motorcyclist was killed in a horrific smash on the A48 at Minsterworth on Friday night - the 'TWELTH' road death in the Forest of Dean area THIS YEAR'!
The 750cc Suzuki motorcycle was in collision with a tractor and a trailer unit.
Minsterworth Parish council chairman, Coun Cathy Thomas said the village was "devastated" by the tragedy.
"How many deaths will it take before the authorities cut the speed on the road?," she said.
"The whole village has been campaigning for a long time for safety measures on the road. Steps have been taken (scameras) but not enough.
The stretch of the A48 between Highnam and Elton Corner has no less than 'FOUR' speed cameras and 'NUMEROUS' speed limits, because so many accidents have happened there in the past.
Minsterworth resident Terry Bourne, 67, whose rear garden backs on to the A48, said "The speed cameras, to me, are a total waste of time"

Scams a "total waste of time" who can argue with that ?
Four scams, numerous speed limits = 'TWELVE DEATHS'!
THIS YEAR !!
And THEN, we get some arsehole writing to his local rag, stating:
CAMERAS CURB SPEED AND HELP SAVE LIVES!
11:00 - 28 May 2005
A Recent Post (Bristol) article suggested there was NO EVIDENCE that speed cameras save lives.
This claim simply makes no sense, however many times it is repeated.
Speed cameras are installed in clearly dangerous places where people have been killed or seriously injured. They are there to deter speeding and any more crashes.
They are preventing more crashes from happening, and the ensuing anguish that follows for victims involved and their families.
Twats like him make puke.
But then:
ARE SPEED CAMS REALLY WORKING?
11:00 - 30 May 2005
Officials at the Department for Transport are set to study if the reduction in accidents at speed camera sites is due to the controversial traps, or if the fall is a coincidence. The outcome of the survey could settle the debate surrounding the effectiveness of the cameras once and for all and establish if they are simply a tool for collecting a "stealth tax", as critics claim.
Road camera safety partnerships, including Avon and Somerset's, together with the Department for Transport (DfT) have previously claimed that speed cameras have been successful in reducing the number of deaths or serious injuries on our roads by up to 40 per cent.
But statisticians say this reduction could have happened even if there were not any cameras at accident blackspots.
The theory suggests that in the wake of a spate of road accidents on a particular stretch of road a decrease will almost inevitably follow, whether or not a camera is installed.
This is because the long-term accident rate is likely to be lower than the rate during the short period in which the cluster of accidents took place, experts have worked out.
The theory has been seized on by anti-speed camera campaigners, who argue that is shows the cameras have little impact on road safety and are just money-raising devices.
