One of Tony Blair's most trusted advisers is leaving the Government to join BP.
Anji Hunter will leave her job as Director of Government Relations in Downing Street to join the company in the new year.
She has been at Mr Blair's side since he became Labour leader seven years ago. Observers say her departure will send shock waves through Whitehall.
Ms Hunter will join BP as director of communications.
Ms Hunter accompanied the Prime Minister on his visit to Washington for talks with George W Bush. She has also accompanied him during his recent hectic shuttle diplomacy missions since September 11.
She famously chooses his ties and has guided Mr Blair's every move since he became Labour leader following the death of John Smith.
Neither Downing Street nor the oil company had any immediate further comment on the news of Ms Hunter's resignation.
