Review of national car number plates

The Government has launched a review into the display of national flags and symbols on car number plates.

The move comes after Scottish nationalists objected to new regulations outlawing the Scottish saltire.
The eight-week consultation process, beginning in October, will also consider the use of alternative identifying letters such SCO and WAL on vehicle number plates.
Transport minister John Spellar has ordered the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency to carry out an urgent review of the issue a day before the new number plate system, allowing British drivers to use the blue European "circle of stars" symbol and the GB national identifier, becomes law.
In recent years plates featuring SCO underneath the Scottish saltire and the European Union flag have become popular among many motorists north of the border.

And :
MU registration plates upset Liverpool and Everton fans

Football fans buying new cars on Merseyside are upset because their number plates begin with the letters MU.
Some Liverpool and Everton fans are demanding different registrations because they do not want to be linked with Manchester United.
All registrations on new plates for Merseyside and Manchester begin M. U is the next letter on many plates in the first batch.
Peter Rosser, a sales manager at dealer People's in Speke, said: "Customer are insisting they will definitely not take the MU plates.
"They don't want their new motor connected with Manchester United in any way. Luckily we had a supply of plates without the U and were able to use them."
The DVLA told 'The Mirror' it had arranged several swaps.

Well, MY Union Jack is STAYING.

Sad

I'm sorry but have people nothing better to do than worry about a number plate.
I mean they are just a row of letters and numbers after all, I really can't see what the problem is.

the operative word.

Were you the same wankers that were disputing Mercs patriotism, down to supermarket shopping ????
When you lefties have got something to say we 'might' listen to reason, otherwise go join the queue in the Australian waters.
Or try quoting your God, seeing as he is making such a brilliant job, you have to resort to insults to hide the facts.

"as the tradesmark of the present Government is Spin, Sleeze and Falsification. e.g the hospitals, schools, and foot and mouth chaos, will there be at last a totally independant count and report when the nation votes for the pound or the euro next year - if we are given the chance"
beginning to like reading my local rag

Anon - how would you like to be told that you could no longer fly a Union Flag on your own property, instead having to show the blue&gold EU symbol?
It's the same with cars, - they tried to stop us showing a national flag, but made it OK to show the EU symbol. The question is WHY? Could it be a sneaky way of pushing the EU image over the national one? Another way of softening us up ready for the Euro? I don't want my car to be a mobile advert for the Socialist Wet-Willy State of Europe!
Now the question is - were they LYING to us when they said this ruling came from the EU and couldn't be altered, OR dindn't they know? Either way, New Labour once again looks like a bunch of LIARS or a bunch of INCOMPETENTS.

No it wasn't. How many times do this have to be explained?

There NEVER was any legislation to stop you displaying whatever flag you wanted on your car or anywhere else for that matter. You could display a Union Jack, a Welsh dragon, a Hammer & Sickle or a skull n'cross bones without any problem whatsoever.

It was an attempt to standardize the licence plate for EU citizens who wish to travel freely within the EU.

You are lacking a sense of perspective on this.

If this was supposed to standardise EU number plates then SHOULD NOT THE NUMBERS HAVE BEEN STANDARDISED?

If not then AS A MINIMUM there should have been a country identifier, ie in the UK/GB a UK/GB identifier!

EG A GB?UK FLAG.

This is NOT complicated.

Secondly, whatever should have happened, why does the UK government always over apply, and over enforce, trivial and inconsequential EU dictat, when the rest of the EU ignore even major laws?

The point isn't whether you can stick a union jack on your car, and where, the point is: what is the UK/EU bureaucracy playing at.

Where my response was:

Yeah, obviously I must be [blind] ; - ).

Give me a clue:

Is the lettering as big as it legally had to be on the old country oval stickers?

As big as the old minimum size number plate lettering?

The not so old minimum size small number plate lettering?

The new minimum size further reduced number plate lettering?

None of the above?
