Let the backlash begin.....

by Curio

I FINALLY got to see Nemesis yesterday afternoon. Very excited. Have not felt this way about seeing a movie for simply ages!!!!!
And you know what? I fekin’ loved it. Let the backlash begin.
The funny thing is – I can't work out why I loved it. Was it simply because it was Trek? Undoubtedly. Did I love the script? Sorta.
So here we go. But beware – massive spoilers from here on in.

First things first. The new credits. Oooooo, I got chills. They were brilliant. Right up there with ‘Alien’ brilliant. Didn’t care at all that this was the first Trek film to not have the whole damn cast at the beginning but so what? The music swelled, the title appeared and I was HOOKED.
Cut to the wedding. Love the speech by Picard, love the fact that Wesley is sitting next to his Mom.
The stupid Spiner song got to me though. It was just Brent’s way of giving himself more screentime and showing us his shortcomings. Boo.
Cut to the NEW SHIP. Enterprise E. The new bridge looks shiny, the panels were flashy – all looks fine.
Cut to the Dune Buggy scene from cinematography hell. Why bother overexposing the shot like that???? I guess it was to make it look hot but all it did was make me squint.
Blah, blah, blah. Did they have to make Janeway look so damn ugly? I mean, really, that is one sexy woman and you have just plunged her back into Season 1 Voyager with the Power Hair.
Nevermind, moving right along.
Shinzon. I love Tom Hardy. I think we might see more of him. Loved the backstory about how he was made. Could have done with a little more fill in on how the Romulan / Reman Empires work and their history – if only for the neophytes who don’t watch Trek. But really, do they make Trek for the mainstream? I don’t think so.
I think Logan secretly hates women. There was NO female screentime and the only time Deanna had was to whimper, cry, fall into Riker’s arms or get mentally raped. Lovely.
The Reman Warbird was truly a thing of beauty especially when the wings unfolded to discharge the weapon. Wonderful.
I think the writers TOTALLY wasted their supporting cast.
Lets look at the list of people who had absoluely nothing to do.
Ron Pearlman. Dina Meyer. Gates McFadden. LeVar Burton. And why was Worf there???? Didn’t he become an ambassador at the end of DS9!!!!!!! There were some major plotholes here.
Just one big nitpick.
Do you think that Picard (the Picard WE know and love not Logan’s version) would have rammed the Enterprise into the Reman Warbird like that? I had problems with that part. Not so much the logistical part of ramming a ship when you don’t have any shields. Forget that. I mean Picard sacrificing hundreds of crew members who are presumably in the front part of the ship. Guess we are now onto the ‘F’.

I stayed all the way to the end credits, listening to that fabulous score. You can’t compare Trek films to other films. They don’t exist within a vaccum. They have hundred of years of history to contend with and all the Trek lore. Every Trek film and EVERY Trek series WILL contradict some part of Trek-dom. Who cares? They are back. I think that’s all that matters.
All in all, a rousing good time.

PS. I HATE Rick Berman.
