two thoughts

Trek is dead.

A gamble is being made in the vein of 'remaking' Trek.

Since the second thought is absolutely true then the first thought has become validated.

Personally, I'd like to see the shat guest star as an admiral reliving his days. you're not really remaking anything then. just telling a story.

As for Next generation films. meh.
