More skin showing on this series that those short skirts the female members of TOS ever showed! LOL

Yes.

September 27 2001, 6:23 AM

I must admit, he looked NICE!

And is it just me, or are the special effects better than on Andromeda? Not only that, but why did we get the whole two hour premiere at once with Enterprise, but had to have it broken up with Andromeda?

I was not terribly impressed.

The production values were mostly good (but not better or even as good imho than Farscape).

The opening scene was interesting and I liked the set up for them going out.

But as I watched it the pace just seemed so ponderously slow and I felt this sadness that Trek was no longer the place to look for cutting edge story telling.

Future bad guys trying to derail the past??? Where have I heard that before? Oh yeah that would be "First Contact". My mother hit on the "Independence Day" cliched feeling of the two man rescue effort even before I did. And excuse me, you're a futuristic bad guy who's under attack, one of your ships has been taken and there are no security measures for incoming ships??????????

And that decontamination scene, complete with T'Pol's erect nipples? My goodness, that made the original Star Trek look positively progresssive when it comes to gratuitous female exploitiveness.

And T'Pol herself reminded me of that chick from Lexx. And Hoshi was a scared little rabit civilian with NO business on that ship.

What ever happened to strong female characters in Trek?

I guess Babylon 5, Farscape and Andromeda must have the corner on that market.

Now believe it or not I didn't hate it;) I just wasn't overall impressed.

I DID like all the male characters except Phlox who's make up was a cross between Neelix and a badly mauled Cardasian.

Anyways, it's only the first ep and I'll tune in for more.

But big cgi budget or not, this didn't compare favorably imho with Andromeda's two hour premiere. Not by a very VERY long shot.

All mho.

I missed the first hour of the show, but what I saw of the 2nd hour didn't really impress me. But I have the flu so when I see all of it this weekend, hopefully I'll be in a better frame of mind.

I did see the gel scene and....*yawn*

Shamba

I agree that it seemed kind of slow

September 27 2001, 9:14 AM

and I would think certainly they probably have more money for special effects than Andromeda has.

Hoshi's character may have to discover more grit than she showed last night! But maybe it's her first foray in a starship???

I like T'pol but I hope she's not going to be the only strong female character on the show. (Did anyone every say Vulcan female's can't have boobs?) Actually, I had no clue that that was a decontamination scene because I missed a few minutes before it came on. I wondered what they were doing rubbing that stuff all over each other.

As for plot lines, I kind of expect to see the same kind of plots that I've seen in other Trek or scifi shows. I would hope their writer's could come up with new twists in them though.

I did think the male character next in chain of command under T'pol, I can't remember his name, was good as the captain's supporter and so suspicious of outsiders and non-Earth beings. (Does that make sense the way I wrote that???)

Generally, I enjoyed it. But I'm also expecting some things to get better.

Whisper

I loved it!

September 27 2001, 9:50 AM

I liked it much better than the premiere of Andromeda, which is hard to say. I liked the plot line better (used or not), make up, special effects, and characters. I like the fact that it's not six characters in a Big Brother like atmosphere; it's an entire starship of people on an adventure. I just liked it!

Now, does T'pol have excessively pouty lips? Are her boobs too big? Does she nip too often? Eh, if she does her job, I just don't care. Like I said regarding Rommie and Rov, it's the characters' attitude more than appearance that matter to me most.

Loved the captain, loved the second under T'pol, loved the engineer, loved the doctor (riot). Mostly, NOBODY irritated me beyond belief. I can't wait until next week!

Whisper

And YET again, we agree!

September 27 2001, 1:28 PM

I didn't really hold out much hope for this one, but I liked it. And I don't like anything "Trek"! Never been a big fan of it. But this one I will continue to watch.
And again, I have to agree with you Whisper..... I liked it way better than Andromeda. Hate to say it, but there it is. Now this isn't to say that I'm not waiting to see Andromeda again, I am! I have my fingers crossed that this season will be better than last.... <<shrug>>

And there is the "Dark Angel" premire tomorrow night. THAT one I will be glued to! I love that show!!

Lil

Sorry

September 28 2001, 12:02 AM

but there was NO REASON for a stupid scene featuring T'pol's erected breasts OTHER than as eye candy. IMHO Braga and Berman are convinced that female exploitation and slick cgi are all that's necessary to make a good show.

I will give them about two more episodes (i.e. as far as it took Andromeda to get to airing DMinus zero) to prove me wrong.

If they haven't done it by then they are OUT of my viewing.

It's so sad to see the Trek franchise reduced to cliched time travel and gratuitous sex, it really is.:(

if you missed it. . .

September 28 2001, 7:34 AM

go to clicktv and check for weekend listings.

I missed the premiere also (somehow I was thinking it started in Oct) BUT, it's on other channels on Sat and Sun. Unfortunately, (here anyway) the times are soooo inconvenient I'm not sure I'll be able to watch it! 3:00pm on a Sat???? 5:00 pm on a Sunday???? I hate Dish Network! The decontamination thing

September 28 2001, 10:28 AM

was the only part out of the whole show where I rolled my eyes. I just don't understand why they couldn't have gone in one at a time to take care of business, but then again, it wasn't that big of a deal...

I loved LOVED the time warp room! That was COOL!! I loved their lack of faith in transporting people! I love that they're just starting out, just getting to know those that they might call aliens. This is FUN! It's NEW! Everything they look at will be exciting to them! Everything will be noteworthy! Of COURSE they will be doing things that have already been done. OF COURSE! This is the past!

Now, for the captain. I would place him firmly behind Picard and a bit ahead of Kirk in the demand command category, but as I liked Kirk and Picard equally (though for different reasons), that's a good thing!!

One final thought on the two hour opening"

s

l

r

s

Here's the deal as I see it (and it's only my pov).

Sex is something that is sold on lots of shows, INCLUDING Andromeda ( I mean, Dylan Tyr Rommie and Trance come on)

The problem I have with what happened on Enterprise is this: in its PILOT it chose to not only over sell ms. collagen lips t'pal, it inserted a completely unecessary and imho gratuitous scene that was again imho put there for the sole purpose of arousing the audience, as is most clearly evidenced by the erect nipples at the end of that scene.

If this had happened later in the show (like say the way the weight lifting scene in Andromeda's Forced Perspective happened) I'd be a LOT more inclined to believe that Braga and Berman did not DELIBERATELY do what they did in the opener for the EXPRESS purpose of picking up where they left of with Seven of Nine.

Again, mho.

Well......

September 30 2001, 6:44 PM

Like you said, it's all about opinions.
Mine is that that "sex scene" wasn't that bad. It could of been worse and that it was nothing more or less than what I've seen on other shows. Now that doesn't make it anymore right or wrong, I just didn't find it that offensive. And I sure didn't think it was bad enough to ruin the whole show for me. Just one of those that you shake your head at and "tsk" Hollywood for and move on and enjoy the rest of the show. Which I did.
But again, like you've said, it's all about opinions..........

Lil

For sure:)

October 1 2001, 10:33 AM

and lest anyone think that I absolutely hated it, which I didn't, here are things I thought were way cool about it:

1. The visuals of the opening theme (though I could do without that song).

2. The teaser sequence and the first scenes leading up to the Enterprises' departure

3. The twist of portraying the vulcans as sort of benign oppressors

4. The "dimension" room or whatever that room was when time seemed to act strangely

5. Seeing Scott Bakula back with his own show.

Anyone that knows me, knows that I don't do "Trek".
But I gotta say that it was refreshing to see this side of it. I loved the way that the things we take for granted in a "Trek" show was all new to them. They transporter, and how no one was ready to try it! <LOL!> I thought that was classic. And the "fazers" (sp?) were new: "Well, we know stun works....". Another classic. And a great line!
It doesn't seem to take it's self so serious. That is a "Trek" that I can "get into".

Lil

I forgot....

October 1 2001, 1:52 PM

about the nostalgia factor being something I LOVED. It was so neat to see the first phasers and to see the original transporter effect used. I got just a little misty I did...;)

October 1 2001, 8:44 PM

I have to say that I really liked Enterprise. I was a little skeptical about it, mostly because Voyager, in my opinion, showed a huge drop in the quality of Star Trek and I would have hated to see it get worse and worse... Luckily, I was wrong!

I don't think I'll say anything that gives stuff away, but just in case:

S

P

O

I

L

E

R

S

First off, I thought the effects were wonderful. It had an almost movie feel to it. Sadly to say, I never really liked the space scenes of Andromeda cuz I could tell they were fake. But Star Trek had a way of making what I knew was fake feel real, and Enterprise was no different.

Secondly, I was happy to see a return to characters with fun and quirky personalities. And, yeah, so far nobody's gotten on my nerves. I like the fact that Captain Archer has a dog. It's so CUTE!!!!!! Each of the characters managed to establish their personalities in just that first episode, and their interactions with each other was enjoyable to watch.

The writing was good, if a little hard to follow. (Then again, that may be because people kept walking in and out of my room... ) I liked that the story basically centered around encountering Klingons for the first time. Hoshi's problems with the Klingon language was funny. And I enjoyed all the little first time things like phasers and transporters and the fact that they were so excited to get Warp 4.5.

My biggest qualm with the show, though, was the fact that the Vulcans weren't detached and emotionless. They seemed more irritable and testy. Maybe they hadn't progressed to full logical emotional detachment yet.

And lastly, maybe it's just me, but Enterprise didn't feel very Star Treky. I've gotten so used to the settings looking almost as sterile as a hospital and just as white and bright. Something about it was different. Even DS9 felt more Star Treky, and it was quite a departure from traditional Star Trek. I really can't put my finger on anything in particular except for the beginning. The opening credits was beautifully well done and strangely appropriate because of recent events, but I've come to expect orchestrations and pictures of space anomalies, so the rock music and images kind of caught me off guard. It works, especially considering Cochran's love of rock music (based on First Contact), but it didn't feel like Star Trek. I guess I just need to get used to it.

Overall, I loved it. I've loved Star Trek for as long as I can remember, and, so far, I'm happy with Enterprise as a new Star Trek series.

(Geez, I wrote a lot more than I intended to!)

I was anxious to see it, and if I remember correctly, I believe this episode also saw me rolling my eyes only once (I'm sorry, but an officer getting all teary and emotional because she was "lonely"? Wrong.).

They had some very good ideas with this ep. I particularly liked the idea that the captain of this ship is not only an explorer, not just a military officer, but also a humanitarian. I was happy to see that bigger is not necessarily better, as far as starships go (this has been a contention for me for awhile).

I can already see the relationships growing between these poeple. I'm happy to see them working as a team and depending on one another. It is imperative, to make this show work, that they have some kind of shared common interest, whether that be keeping each other safe, the love of exploration, or a common enemy. No common goal = crappy show. So far, this is NOT a crappy show!

Lil

I liked it too

October 11 2001, 7:57 AM

My thoughts on "Fight or Flight" (I recorded ep three but won't see it until Saturday or Sunday)

Hoshie may have gone through the training but at heart she's a teacher. After how disappointed with her I was in the premiere I was pleased with what they did with her in this episode though the shots of her sitting at the communication console on the bridge were so UHURA that they made me cringe.

T'Pol still bugs me. Alot. The actress plays her sarcastic, sneering, and highly ILLOGICAL. I think she needs to go watch some old TOS film to see how Nimoy did it. Frankly, for me she is the weakest thing about the show.

I REALLY like the weapons guy (who I'll be meeting in Phoenix YAY@!). In fact he's rapidly becoming my favorite character.

LOVED the idea of the officers having dinner together and hashing things out over a meal. That is so very...REAL and HUMAN. I thought that was one of the best scenes of the series so far.

I'm hot and cold on the Engineer. I liked him better in the premiere. I guess we'll see.

Phlox was surprisingly not annoying in this episode. His scenes with Hoshi were well done, and YAY that there were no CGI smiles.

I thought the scene at the end where Hoshi had to save the day with her translating skills, while predictable, was well done and presented a plausible reason for her deciding to stay on the ship (something that had bothered me in the premiere).

Archer's DOG is so cute! I LOVE that a Starfleet captain has a pet on board. Go Porthos:)

The young ensign still hasn't had a lot to do. I hope he doesn't become Harry Kim because that would be a shame.

I'm still getting a feel for Archer but so far I think Scott Bakula is doing a nice job.

Do I think this cast has the chemistry that the Andromeda cast had after three episodes (two hour premiere plus one): no. But could they???? Who knows.

Good enough to keep me watching.

all mho:)

Mermaid

Finally!

October 11 2001, 9:56 AM

I got to see it last night! I think it was the third episode? I didn't catch the title of it though. My opinions? Seems ok, didn't have me on the edge of my seat, didn't bore me to death. The Phlox character reminds me of Nelix and had me thinking for a minute because in the original series, the only non-human on ship was a Vulcan. The other characters are all pretty nondescript, no one really stood out, their personalities seemed all the same. T'Pol, or whatever her name is, seemed like a mix of Seven of Nine and Vulcan. Her body was, imho, almost Barbie-like in it's unrealistic proportions! Was that a ten inch waist or what? And her HUGE "rack" and those very long legs? And perfect ass? Yeah, I believe she is there to appease the Seven of Nine fans who are going through withdrawls! And the lips have got to go! Someone should tell her to stop trying to look pouty and stick them out! Begone!! Love the beagle! HE can stay! LOL!

Whisper

Okay,

October 11 2001, 10:08 AM

I LIKE T'Pol! I don't care what she looks like (hubby probably does ), but I do like the way she carries herself. There she is, trying to do things by Vulcan protocol and Vulcan logic (which is what she really knows and trusts, and she knows it almost innately), and she's surrounded by a crew who do not like or trust Vulcans, and therefore do not like or trust her. I think she pulls it off very well! The doctor is just great. I like that he's very Bones-like in nature. Archer is doing very very well, but I wish they wouldn't make him so "feely". He's an officer, after all, and should behave like one during possible life altering decision making situations.

I've watched ep 3, and I liked this one too!! I love the interaction between characters!! They've all got their own personal relationships between one another, yet they have the combined camaraderie and trust of those who must have confidence in one another for their mission. This show will work!! I know it already!

One thing. I wish they'd change the lighting on the bridge, but that's a personal preference.

I see what you're saying here. That bothered me at first too. But then I started looking at it as him still trying to find his "style" ( for lack of a better word...). It's like he knows he's the boss, and they know he's the boss, but the boss is still leary about "stepping on toes".
I know I didn't really explain that very well, but it the best I could do today. <<LOL>>

This from someone who has yet to see it, but...

October 11 2001, 4:09 PM

Do you think maybe the reason Captain Archer is perhaps less...captainy and less starched than his ST captain predecessors or future Star Fleet captains could be because Star Fleet is still very much in its infancy and so there isn't all that much of a captainly tradition to go on?

Just throwing it into the mix.

He doesn't act much like a military man at all. I just think some of these writers need to spend some time on an aircraft carrier or a military base of some kind to see what military people are really like, to see how ingrained military protocol becomes to those who make it their life's work. It just doesn't ring true that Captain Archer (actually, that ANY captain) would skip all protocol before going on an exploratory mission, much less take most of the commanding personnel of his vessel with him!

It's just wrong. It would never happen! No captain worthy of the title is going to say, "Oh, come on... have a little fun!" and totally disregard any safety procedures at all!

But I liked the ep otherwise!!!

Okay, this episode had me rolling!! T'Pol was PERFECT in this. When she said, completely straight-faced, "Three days. You were there for three days." I was holding my side!! Clearly the writers have some insight to how any woman would truly see this!!

And the nipple(s)!!! OMGs!! That was priceless!!! Commander Trip was perfect! His concern that everyone was looking at him was right on! I am liking this guy more and more every time!

Doctor Phlox was once again the perfect touch of comedic relief.

The alien spaceship was very cool. I really liked the eels.

The Klingons were exactly perfect. Their attitude rang so true! I just liked everything.

Now, I missed about 5 minutes or so where I was answering a telephone call, so I can't say there were absolutely no bad spots, but overall this was one terrific episode!!!
