PMSin'

October 24 2001 at 9:56 PM
Whisper

Woke up in the mornin',
Got showered, was dressin'.
Before I knew what was happenin',
I was PMSin'.

Kids out the door.
Husband wants his pressin'.
You'da thought by now,
He'da learned his lesson.

Growlin' at my boss.
Work is depressin'.
Words gettin' out,
"She's definitely stressin'."

Traffic's a bite.
Ragers are obsessin'.
Before I can stop it,
My finger starts expressin'.

Dinner on the table.
We're outta salad dressin'.
Family eats in silence.
Even quiet is distressin'.

Kids kiss me good-night.

Husband starts caressin'.

I look at my Angels.

And then I start assessin'.

It's always been a curse,
This monthly PMSin'.
But if it's the price to pay,
Being a woman's still a blessin'.

*********

Okay, so when you feel the anxiety building you just have to do SOMETHING!!

You know, I was trying to describe to a male friend of mine what PMS was like. It's a hard thing to do. He was under the misconception that PMS just meant "that time of the month". I cleared that up for him! What I finally said that sunk in was, "Have you ever known somebody to so thoroughly anger you that you've wanted to punch them in the nose? You know, when you're just so angry and frustrated that your friends have to hold you back." He said, "Well, yeah." I said, "Okay, it's that kind of feeling. Only, nobody did anything to anger you, and you have nobody to hold you back." He got the point.

Here's what my doctor told me that helps. He said that for many/most women, there are a couple of times during the month when they begin to retain water. This sounds pretty benign, but I guess it's a root to a bunch of problems. Once this extra water is collected in the body, the hormone levels are diluted (like adding four cans of water to a concentrated juice, instead of three). This causes mood swings, bloating, sweating, and even physical discomfort. Taking a product like Pamprin or Midol will help this because these products contain mild diuretics, as well as pain killers. Once the body's water level is back on kilter, the hormone levels are once again balanced, and we become the fun loving, gentle, sweet, irresistable gals we were before (oh hush!)! {Now, of course there are some women who have additional issues, and who can't be helped by simply a Pamprin or Midol product.) Isn't that interesting?! I always knew about the symptoms, but I wasn't clear about the cause. shrug

Now when I feel the flood of anxiety, I tell my kids, "Mommy is going to lie down for about 25 minutes. My door's open. Let me know if you need anything." Then I take a couple of pills and lie down. It was while I was lying down the other afternoon that the above poem flitted into my head. I don't think I can take credit for it. I think it was the drugs talking!

It certainly can be a dreadful problem for women, eh? I got soooo angry during that time, but these days I pretty much know my biorhythms and can recognise why I'm like I am. Tend to withdraw more than usual to deal with it, but I've also become more interested in "honouring" my "moon time" and all that goes with it, rather than seeing it as a course. Did a workshop not all that long ago that was quite amazing, and I learned so much from it. Doesn't make the split personality thing go away, but it has gone a long way to me being more calm and comfortable in dealing with myself at those times

Now you only pretend to be a screaming banshee instead of being one, eh Kendaa:):):) <WEG> Sorry couldn't resist that one hon:) Seriously the moon 'stuff' has helped you greatly. Fortunately I'm not a PMTer to any degree I just have to take evening primrose 2 weeks beforehand and I dont' get bloated or the urge to stuff tooooo much chocolate.

People know when I'm screaming for real Yeah, though, it really helps if you can be aware of what you're doing and try to step back from it. And the moon thingy - yeah, it's been wonderful for me.

Back to my Quantum Leap marathon.

Beam me up Scotty!

Well

October 26 2001, 7:56 AM

I do the retain water thing twice a month (O & M) (is this too much information? LOL!), so I guess I'd be on the evening primrose full time! Seriously, my family have learned to just give Mommy some space, and Mommy has learned to go. to. her. room!

I know women have had to deal with this sort of thing forever. It would be interesting to know just what sort of things they did centuries ago that helped. Of course the Native American women would all go to the "special" hut during that time. I'll bet just being away from the husband and kids was a huge help!

Heard this song today and thought of you all! ** BG**

October 26 2001, 1:44 PM

Shania Twain
Song title Man! I Feel Like a Woman!
Album Come On Over

Lyrics I'm going out tonight - I'm feeling allright
Gonna let it all hang out
Wanna make some noise - really raise my voice
Yeah, I wanna scream and shout

No inhibitions - make no conditions
Get a little out of line
I ain't gonna act politically correct
I only wanna have a good time

BRIDGE
The best thing about being a woman
Is the prerogative to have a little fun and...

CHORUS
Oh, oh, oh, go totally crazy - forget I'm a lady
Men's shirts - short skirts
Oh, oh, oh, really go wild - yeah, doin' it in style
Oh, oh, oh, get in the action - feel the attraction
Colour my hair - do what I dare
Oh, oh, oh, I wanna be free - yeah, to feel the way I feel
Man! I feel like a woman!

The girls need a break - tonight we're gonna take
The chance to get out on the town
We don't need romance - we only wanna dance
We're gonna let our hair hang down

BRIDGE

CHORUS

CHORUS

I get totally crazy
Can you feel it
Come, come, come now baby

I feel like a woman!

If you want an outstanding site on the subject:

http://www.menstruation.com.au

Just A.W.E.S.O.M.E.

I must start getting me some Evening Primrose. I've really come to trust in the healing/health benefits in herbal remedies. We've lost sooooo much over the centuries. (Especially us women folk)
