Yowie... I know it's still to soon to be sure..

September 22 2002 at 3:09 PM
Shoshana

but it looks like we got some BIG rain comin this way!

Check out the top left graphic at this site ...http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_astorm10.html

Right now, local forcasters are comparing Isidore to Andrew, the hurricane that devestated South Florida 10 years ago. It's almost a catagory 4 heading into warm waters. It's moving very slowly, getting stronger and it's also a wider than normal hurricane...

OK ... so I'm twitchy... but our nephew is in school in New Orleans - one of the worst places to be in a hurricane - it's below sea level, and surrounded by water on 3 sides - and officials have already said the levees won't hold if the city is hit by a cat 4 hurricane. And ... they can't even evacuate everyone because there's only one way out - north if there's any rise in water.

And everyone I know in the Houston metroplex - especially in the cities south of Houston like Texas City are already making arrangements to stay in Dallas. Some are coming up even before they know where it's gonna hit because they know it's a nightmare when everyone's trying to leave at once.

If it hits Texas and I go offline - don't worry. We're quite a fair distance from the coast.

Shoshana

huh

September 22 2002, 6:14 PM

{{{Whisper}}}... can you remove my double post please? Thanks!

Well in the last hour, I've talked to a bunch of people on the coast. And no one is staying home - at least that's the plan for now. So... the Nephew is coming here. That will be fun.

'shana

Kendaa

Ok

September 22 2002, 6:30 PM

I KNOW I replied to this and it came up - and now it's gone and 'shana's post is here in triplicate - ok, who let Strife out of his kennel, huh? LOL!

Shoshana

I don't know what's going on here

September 22 2002, 6:38 PM

Aquillea

Soooo... Can I reply OK if I'm logged in?

September 22 2002, 9:41 PM

Since the repeats come before 'shana's addendum... I'm guessing I can.

I'm sure all the folks possibly causing your post to repeat are offering up thoughts and prayers...

YOU BE SAFE... ya hear?!!!!

Aquillea

Soooo... is the last repeat 'shana testing her theory?

September 22 2002, 10:13 PM

Me too. I've logged off.

Will we get "no such message" or will we get a repeat of 'shana's?

Muahahaha!

snicker

Anyway, the main thing is that everyone stays safe!

shamba

HOpe this is working now

September 23 2002, 8:16 AM

and that Isidore doesn't hit our coast as a cat gory 4 storm!

Shoshana

*Still* to early to tell!

September 23 2002, 10:19 AM

Coastal Louisiana towns are already starting to evacuate - even tho we won't know anything till Thursday. But it takes a long time to evacuate South Louisiana because there aren't many roads thru the bayous...

Galveston TX officials sound like they want to start evacuating the island - but they don't have enough info either yet. That's another place I wouldn't want to be in a cat 4 hurricane - once the winds pick up, they close all the causeways to the mainland. And the 1900 cat 4 that hit Galveston was the deadliest hurricane to hit the US. Of course back then a bunch of people were unaware of the danger they were in...

Ya'll can't tell that I'm a little twitchy, huh? I know too much about hurricanes!

{{{{{{{{{{{'shana}}}}}}}}}} and BE SAFE! I hope everyone is safe when it hits.

Hugs,
Kendaa, who can remember all too well what happened when Cyclone Tracy went through Darwin in 1974. "Santa never made it into Darwin" because there was no longer any (and I do mean ANY) Darwin left.

September 24 2002, 3:01 AM

I was thinking about you when I typed this ... are you heading north too?

It's looking more and more like it's gonna be the upper Texas coast to somewhere in LA. Unless it isn't. Sigh. Hurricanes.

Nephew is bringing friends... maybe I should wait on finishing the mowing till they get here?

{{{Kendaa}}} EEP! Right now the storm has weakened a lot - but - slow and weak storms can be worse than fast and furious in terms of inland flooding - last year Tropical Storm Alicia dumped 20+ inches of rain on Houston, this year it happened in the San Antonio/Austin area. They're saying now that we won't even get wet this time.

{{{Fayee}}} yeah, but we should be ok now, the forecast is for it to miss central Texas now. We just need to woory about people on the coast and in Louisiana and Mississippi now...

'shana

Shoshana

oops

September 24 2002, 3:02 AM

I think last year was Allison - Alicia was a few years back...

Tabbycat

Re: Yowie... I know it's still to soon to be sure..

September 24 2002, 3:39 AM

You're right Shana...

Allison was last year... "just" a tropical storm that dumped three feet of rain on Houston. Alicia was a "big" hurricane in 1982 that was a direct hit on Galveston, then on to Houston where it blew out all those huge plate glass windows in the skyscrapers. I think she was category 3.

I don't think I am leaving. By the time they decide to close the schools it will be too late. Traffic will be moving at a crawl on every route out of the area. I would not care to be on the road during the hit.

Thanks for thinking of me!

Tabbycat

oh yeah...

September 24 2002, 3:46 AM

Forgot to say... I agree with shana about those slow moving tropical systems. They are worse than hurricanes. They cause the massive flooding (unless you are so close to the coast that the storm surge gets you.) I will take a fast-moving hurricane that blasts through and moves on quickly over a slow-moving tropical storm any day!

Shoshana

It's official..

September 24 2002, 10:35 AM

They've declared a state of emergency in New Orleans. Nephew's school is closed till Sunday - he and 4-5 of his friends are leaving today. They still don't know if they're gonna go to Dallas or Austin. Depends on what roads are open.

Hopefully the forecasters have that path figured out correctly...

Shamba

anymore news on Isidore???

September 25 2002, 8:59 AM

as far as anyone here is concerned. I see it's going to hit Looziana rather than Texas. I need to find the Hurricane Center site ....

Take care my friend

September 25 2002, 5:33 PM

I will be thinking of you. One of our radio stations here in CT said we should be getting some of the left over rain on Saturday (hopefully not) but just know that I am thinking of you and all of our friends

Shoshana

Sigh

September 30 2002, 3:00 PM

We made it through ok - still waiting to hear if The Nephew's house in New Orleans flooded.

But guess what?

Lili is coming!

Who knows where though. This one looks like it's going to be more of a straight shot at Texas. But then again... it will be a few days before we know for sure. Landfall is estimated to be Thursday or Friday.

At least Kyle doesn't seem to be aiming for us!

Good grief!

{{{{{{{{{{'shana/affected USA people}}}}}}}}}

Is it hurricane season? They're really concentrated this time, aren't they?

Tabbycat

heh

September 30 2002, 4:51 PM

I'm gettin' pretty good at the ol' prep routine. In less than 30 minutes I filled the truck's gas tank, withdrew "hurricane cash" from the bank, and was in and out of the grocery store for a supply of unperishable foods. That meant no ice cream! :)But I'm gettin' pretty tired of it. Seems like we were doin' this just last week! Lili looks like it might get us. But so far she doesn't look as big as Alicia was.

Shoshana

yeah

September 30 2002, 6:25 PM

hurricane season. Till Nov 30. Altho last year - we were on a ship going to Puerto Rico Dec 1 and caught the tail end of something. 10 foot seas. What a time to find out my poor Hunter gets seasick... (just icky feeling) he kept saying "Who picked this trip!?!" It was him of course!

Me, being the Amazon that I am - had a great time. I could even read in bed while the ship was corkscrewing. He saw me reading and had to leave...

Heard from the Nephew - roof and minor ceiling damage, otherwise all ok. He doesn't want to turn around and leave again tho!

Good for you Tabby!

We just have to make sure we have enough stuff in the house so we don't have to go out during the storm.

We face some bad fires again this summer so the ol'weather sure is making everyone sit up and take notice!!!

October 2 2002, 9:23 AM

We'll be fine in Austin - it's clouding up but that can't be from the hurricane. We'll just get sideswiped, at most.

I'm just twitchy because the Nephew decided to stay in New Orleans for this one. I don't blame him - he's wiped out from last week and the hurricane is forcasted to make landfall between N'Orleans and Houston -- I wouldn't want him trying to beat the storm right now.

Also twitchy because the Hurricane center just posted that they thought Lili would be a cat 4 when it hit. Last night they said maybe a three, yesterday, they said a two. (Oh and there is a forecaster whe says Kyle, who's been just ambling about the Atlantic, will strengthen as soon as Lili goes onshore ...

Here's the post ... sorry for the all caps - that's the way it's up. And thanks ya'll for putting up with me!! (Tabby - you might want to pack up - just in case...)
THE INTENSITY FORECAST IS MUCH MORE DIFFICULT THAN THE TRACK FORECAST. CONDITIONS APPEAR FAVORABLE FOR FURTHER STRENGTHENING... AS LILI IS WELL-ORGANIZED...STILL OVER WARM WATER...AND HAS GOOD OUTFLOW IN ALL DIRECTIONS EXCEPT SOUTHWEST. ON THE OTHER HAND... THE WATER TEMPERATURES BECOME A LITTLE COOLER CLOSER TO THE COAST... AND DRY AIR SEEN ON WATER VAPOR IMAGERY COULD INTRUDE INTO THE SYSTEM AND STOP DEVELOPMENT. THE INTENSITY FORECAST IS A COMPROMISE BETWEEN THE SHIPS AND GFDL MODELS THAT SHOW LITTLE INTENSIFICATION...AND THE PREMISE OF SRENGTHENING THE SYSTEM UP TO THE LEVEL OF ITS CURRENT SATELLITE SIGNATURE...WHICH IS ABOUT 120 KT. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT LILI COULD PEAK AS A CATEGORY 4 HURRICANE
BEFORE LANDFALL.
And if that isn't bad enough... here's what they edited to add (these are the national hurricane forcasters mind you)
STOP THE PRESSES...THE LATEST FIX FROM THE HURRICANE HUNTER... RECEIVED JUST AFTER THE REST OF THE ADVISORY PACKAGE WAS TRANSMITTED...INDICATES THE PRESSURE HAS DROPPED TO 948 MB. SHOULD THIS BURST OF INTENSIFICATION CONTINUE...THE INITIAL AND FORECAST INTENSITIES WILL LIKELY HAVE TO BE REVISED UPWARD ON THE NEXT PACKAGE.
Revised UPWARD? Arg! What? To a cat 5? eep!

doesn't look like she's turning yet but the forecasters are now predicting a central LA coast lanfall - with the eye just west of Baton Rouge...

It did turn north and will hit Louisiana. And it dropped back to cat 3. But it has slowed a bit (usual when they get close to land) so those folks could be in for quite a day. Storm surge might be 20 feet!

I've been watching the news on this storm on tv and it looks like a bad one. Hope all of you who live or have friends and family in the affected area remain safe.
