You know, I have mixed feelings about this.
August 17 2001, 3:51 PM
Good Republican that I am, I can't help but to have mixed feelings.
Do I think he's an immoral creep? ABSOFREAKINLUTELY!!! He should NEVER be allowed to run for office again! What an ass to have kept ANY info from the police and/or Chandra Levy's family at a time like that. He is a coward and a liar!
Chandra Levy? That POOR girl and her POOR family! I feel for them so much! I pray that everything works out. I really do.
Here's where it gets weird for me:
IF Gary Condit had nothing to do with the disappearance of the girl, this has got to be a nightmare for him. I can't imagine going through life with everything to look forward to and suddenly see it go down the tube, personally AND professionally all at once (regardless of whether he put himself in a risky situation). I think it would make me consider taking my life. It would be devastating.
You know, people like Gary Condit have such high opinions of themselves, that it is almost unreal (and I'm guessing extra difficult) to them when they find out that they're not the untouchable figure(s) they've always pictured themselves.
I guess I feel sorry for the guy.
If, of course, he DID have something to do with her disappearance, then he deserves everything he gets and more.
In case you're wondering, I don't blame Chandra Levy one bit. I think she made some poor choices, but nothing to earn her what she's received.

This is kinda long, so bear with me.
Gary Condit is a married California Congressman who (while living and working in Washington D.C.) was having an affair with an intern from his hometown. Evidently he was having affairs with other women too, but that doesn't exactly figure into the picture too much. The intern's name is Chandra Levy. Well, I guess Ms. Levy was tired of having an affair and wanted to make things more official. She was scheduled to graduate from college, and before she went back to California for the ceremony, she confronted him with this advancement idea of hers. Mr. Condit claims that he ended the relationship with her then. Two days after he ended the relationship, Ms. Levy mysteriously disappeared. That was 109 days ago. Since then Mr. Condit has been questioned by her parents and the police. He has lied to both (by his own admission). He and his lawyer arranged for him to take a private lie detector test, which they claim he passed. He refuses to take a formal lie detector test given by the FBI. He has systematically refused to talk to the media or to his constituents in Modesto, Cal. His apartment has been searched, but not before he was caught tossing an item in a trash can far away. Basically, he has made himself look guilty as sin. Whether he is or not, nobody knows. Nobody really knows what has happened to Ms. Levy or if she's alive or dead, although admittedly it doesn't look good.
Now he's been asked by other congressmen, his hometown newspaper, political figures all over the country, and many of his constituents to resign. I believe that the big reason for this is because he has been so secretive about the whole thing. Everyone has gone from wanting to give the fellow the benefit of the doubt to believing he was trying to cover his tracks. It must be a hard line to walk, as he has to satisfy his lawyers and his politics. Frankly, he's committed political suicide already, so if it was me, I'd just do what my lawyers said to do now. Before? Nah. He shoulda' talked, but now it's really to late to make up for what's happened.
If it was my choice, I would've sent him packing on the morals thing alone, not to mention lying to police and possibly obstructing an investigation. But I do feel for the man. His life has been turned upside down.
So, that's basically it. And feel absolutely FREE to disagree with my opinions, as this is a toughy! I'm all over the place about it.

I'm a Good Democrat and I feel sorry for him--some anyway.
August 17 2001, 8:38 PM
He's obviously been fooling around with women outside is marriage over the years which is crummy. But to see someone's whole life unravel like his seems to be is a terrible thing. I'd hope he is a good guy in some ways and maybe he is but he's looked really bad since he didn't say what he knew about Chandra at the very beginning of her disappearance. I know nothing really about his political record at all.
I haven't followed the story very well but I heard in one news report that he was advised to come clean at the beginning with the whole thing between Chandra and him and he didn't.
He probably didn't have a thing to do with her disappearance himself but he's caught in a nasty situation now. On the other hand, maybe they'll find out he did have something to do with it.
But once someone, anyone, adult or child, is missing this long with nothing turning up the odds are not good for a happy ending. There's a timeframe, I'm sure, that police know is optimal for a missing person to be found dead or alive. After that window of opportunity is passed the odds are the missing person will never be found at all.
Kendaa, I often stay away from the news at least right before I go to bed so it doesn't bother me at night.

Thanks for that Whisper

I get the picture now. What a creep. I feel bad for the girl's parents It's a shame that politics attracts some really scummy people, eh?
Yeah, Shamba, I know what you mean. I just try and ignore the news much of the time now because it's sooooo depressing.

WARNING: PERSONAL OPINION AHEAD!
I don't have one iota of pity or empathy for Gary Condit. He is in the situation he is in now because of decisions - albeit very poor ones - that he decided to make. As far as I can tell, no one put a shotgun to his head and made him have affairs with numerous women, lastly Chandra Levy. Let's not forget the airline attendant who is currently claiming that she was contacted by one of Condit's lawyers to sign a 'confidentiality agreement' to not discuss their affair.
If Gary Condit had just stepped up at the beginning of this entire debacle and publicly admitted to the affair (don't forget that he hasn't talked about it publicly, only to D.C. police) and agreed to help with the investigation, then maybe I would think differently of him. He thought that just because he is a member of the House of Representatives that he could apply a different set of laws, guidelines and morals to himself. If his affair with Chandra Levy was the only one that he had, then I wouldn't think he was a snake.
As for Chandra Levy, she didn't deserve what has happened to her - her disappearance more than likely involved foul play - but she wasn't an innocent in this matter either. She had to have known that having an affair with a married man was morally wrong, but she did it anyway. What I find very interesting is the reports that Gary Condit's wife, who is apparently well known for staying away from Washington, D.C. and staying at their home in Ceres, CA, was in Washington the week leading up to Chandra's disappearance and left immediately afterward. What's the phrase? "Hell hath no fury like the wrath of a woman scorned."
What makes me incredibly sad is that it appears that her family knew about the affair and did nothing to try to influence her to end it. Granted, Chandra was an adult, but we all know the influence that our parents have on us, even as we've grown, moved out, gotten married, started our own families, etc. (The news programs have shown home videos of her family discussing 'her political friend', which was just a sly euphemisn for Condit.) It appears that her family, as well as Chandra, became caught up in the political limelight. Can you imagine the gossip at family events? "Our Chandra has herself a boyfriend (wink, wink, nudge, nudge), who's a mover and shaker in Washington." Geez...
Gary Condit is a married man who had more than one affair and got caught. While it's not illegal to have an affair, it is illegal to obstuct an investigation and that's precisely what Gary Condit did. Yep, Gary Condit has made his own politcal, moral and legal beds and now he has to lay in them. (No pun intended.)
Who knows? Maybe Chandra's disappearance has nothing to do with Gary Condit or their affair. But I doubt it.
Shamba
Hi, SQ! Everything you say is true
August 18 2001, 7:37 AM
but I still have some empathy for a man who's life is unravelling and the family who's daughter disappeared. I'm sure there is some connection between their affair and her disappearance. Neither Chandra nor Condit is innocent at all in this case of the choices thatlead to this situation.

I totally agree!
That's what's freakin' me out so much. I don't understand how I can have empathy for the man, but I do.
I don't understand any of the things that asshole did. Why did he put up $10,000 for an award for any info regarding Ms. Levy and then refuse to talk to anyone? It's just weird!
As far as Ms. Levy goes. Yep, right again. I wouldn't want her as MY friend (dear heavens NO!). She made TERRIBLE decisions! Nothing that earned her what she's evidently received, though. I just can't put blame on her for what's happened. It's like saying that a woman wearing a crotch length skirt is asking to get raped. Was the skirt a good idea? NEVER! Did she deserve what happened? NEVER!
Oh, from reports, the only family member who knew which congressman Ms. Levy was seeing was her aunt (who is equally immoral, from the comments I've seen). I watched Mr. and Mrs. Levy on the cough *choke* Larry King Show recently, and they were very forthright. I tend to believe what they said, or at least believe that they believe what they said. Further, they were a lot more reserved and kind than I think I would've been. Clearly they have some sense of honor, as they wouldn't publicly insult anyone, regardless of how many times the host tried to get them to (not just the congressman, but family, police, public figures, etc...). I woulda ripped the lot of 'em.
And, I'm GLAD you gave your opinion, SaraQuinn! You have a lot of great points, and maybe it'll help me get over the pity I have for a skunk!

Now Whisper, honey, ya might wanna sit down for this because you might be in for the shock of your life...;)
I think it's DISGRACEFUL the way this guy has been tried and convicted by the press. What the frell ever happened to "innocent until PROVED guilty" in this country?
Yeah he's an arrogant s.o.b. and yeah he withheld information. Politicians in tight positions tend to do that....like BILL CLINTON???? And sure that's suspicious but really.
I don't necessarily feel sorry for him but I am becoming increasingly impatient with what passes for justice in this country.
Democrat, Republican, what EVER, everyone's entitled to be treated fairly....and from what I can tell, that ain't happenin' here
Lil,
August 18 2001, 9:31 AM
I don't disagree! Can you believe it?! LMAO!
When this first started, all I cared about was whether Ms. Levy was found alright. Then I started to see all the crap he was doing (and not doing) according to the media, and I started to get angry. Then I saw the completely lost look on his face in one single camera shot, and I started to rethink my position. Yes, he was wrong. Yes, he has made himself look guilty. But, he HAS been publicly tried and convicted by the media that had always been his friend. I don't trust media. I just don't. That's not what this country is about. I resent the way they focus on what they choose to focus on. We hear one side of an argument so often that we don't even know it anymore (i.e., global warming. PLEASE! Don't get me started.).
He needs to resign. I hope he does. Regardless of the fact that he is a representative of Modesto, California, as a member of congress he makes decisions that affect ALL Americans, and I don't want him doing that. Personal opinion there.
However, it remains to be seen whether he's actually guilty of a crime. That is not my job.
Ever confused and frustrated.

Don't get me started on Bill Clinton. I am really upset with that man. Personally, I never ever liked him. You know how you can sometimes look at someone and know exactly what kind of person they are? Well before Mr. Clinton ever won the presidency, I told my husband, parents, and friends that the man was a liar and a narcissist. I had so many people argue with me about so many things regarding him, always taking the side of that man over the years. I couldn't even tell you how many people staked their life savings on the fact that everything was a set-up, blah, blah, blah... For him to lie, lie, lie during his presidency, and then tell the world AFTER his terms were over that he lied, WHAT AN ASS! All of those people, many of whom I care a great deal about, feel as though they were stabbed in the back. I can hardly wait (sarcasm) to read all the crap he puts in his book. My guess is he'll use the opportunity to get back at all of his political enemies. I seriously doubt he'll give all the Nosey Parkers the goods on his private life.
Okay, rant over!! Please feel free to ignore me! LMAO!

As for Condit, he was a very outspoken critic of Slick Willy & said repeatedly & forcefully, that he should have come clean from the beginning over the Monicagate!
Then Condit, goes & takes a page out of Clinton's modus oprandi
What really frosts my N---, is congress is considering passing legislation banning congress from having affairs with interns......haven't they ever heard of the 10 commandments.
As for Democrat & Republican partys......all you have here are 2 party's, 1 policy....I'm an independent voter with no party affiliation, I vote in every election, & do hold strong political, fiscal, & social beliefs; something totally foreign to D's and R's.

Say WHAT? Um...not to point out the obvious (is this really true??????) - but isn't that akin to telling people it's wrong to own guns, to kill, shoot, stab or otherwise maim other people? Ok, it's Sunday and I'm still running around nuts in my head after buying furniture, but...can someone explain to me how Congress passing such a legislation is going to stop members of the government from doing such a thing?

Hmmmm...
August 18 2001, 6:06 PM
Well, you'd think the death penalty for some crimes would be a deterrant too, but...
I suppose I'm just a cynic these days. I can't see this stopping any one who's feeling somewhat randy, I dunno.
Lil
Yeah.......
August 18 2001, 6:16 PM
I'm not saying it will be a total deterrent...just that it can't hurt.
Ah the death penalty...another thorny issue. I believe in it *in principle--I'm not happy with any system I've seen as a practical matter* not as a deterrent but because imho there are some kinds of crimes that simply deserve the ultimate punishment.
It's one of the few issues I've changed my mind on more than once in my life. I was very anti during highschool and college, then pro for a few years, then anti, and now pro....
Lil

Yeah, that's a tough one.

My heart tells me the DP is very, very wrong, for all sorts of reasons, but my emotions - ahhh, now that's another matter. When I see stories about children being brutalised, or all sorts of other things, for that matter...my emotions would have me first in line to pull the switch. But yeah, I am against it in principle. Just don't let anyone I love be hurt.
