Con Report, Sun. , pt. 1

The Start Trek man, Richard Arnold was on again.

Majel Roddenberry was on early in the afternoon. They pronounced her first name, May-jel, like the month May. I hadn’t heard it pronounced ever I think. She read from a prepared text but it was a nice tribute to Gene and his work and his philosophy. She said we all helped make it come true. She also feels herself getting older and finds airplane travel harder and harder to do. She hadn’t been to do a convention in 8 or 9 months. And of course, she said she had decided to not do the producing responsibilities she’d had with Andromeda and EFC.

Whatever happened to the philosophy and directions of Earth, Final Conflict, she is NOT pleased with it at all. She says it will probably survive another year and that’s all. She didn’t go into details but she’s unhappy with the ways that show turned out, it seems. I can’t comment as I only saw it two or three times the first season and it just didn’t grab me at all.

She also made remarks about the way Andromeda has been going. She didn’t say what that was, why she felt that way. I don’t know if she meant the way the second season was going as it is being taped/filmed. Or if her remarks applied to any of the first season eps. She used the pronoun “we” when she talked about the way Andromeda is going. “We”? maybe Kevin, maybe other parts of the whole cast and crew and staff.

One thing she mentioned may be applicable to this. She talked about why was is necessary for there to be battles that have to be won in every episode. Too much violence and the same stuff every week. She knows it probably sells but there are other kinds of stories to tell as well. Later on, Keith also made reference to the battle/action that is in every episode. He thought there should be more stories about the characters themselves and interactions between them and not just on the bridge during shots at whatever enemy is out there. I don’t think any of us would disagree with these ideas.

Majel was interesting to hear and I wonder if it isn’t one of the last ones she may do but she didn’t say anything like that at all. Also, I had never seen her before at all in person. She got a standing ovation when she came on and when she went off. I’d imagine she’s in her 70s and looks quite good. She said that Gene would have been 80 on his birthday this year.

After Majel was Virginia Hey, who was just like she was on Saturday. She wore a different colored long dress but otherwise pretty much the same. She was as nice to everyone as she had been Saturday. See my Saturday report if you want to know what she did and said that day.

Then Manu Intiraymi was on. I guess he was on Voyager the last 2-3 years that I didn’t see the series at all. That wasn’t cause I disliked it so much as my own schedule in life. He is very young. He tended to be flip and a little sarcastic much of the time but he wasn’t putting anyone down when he did it. He answered questions pleasantly and was attentive to the questions. He moved around the stage with the mike in his hand when talking. He wore dark trousers that looked very large and wide, a white T-shirt and a red (?) sort of jacket over it. It wasn’t a sport jacket/suit coat more like a windbreaker/nylon kind of sports thing jacket. His hair was dark and short. He isn’t doing much acting these days and had stories to tell about how hard it was waiting tables when he was doing it.

I had never thought to pronounce her name that way, but it's nice to know!

You said that Majeln Roddenberry made some comments regarding the way Andromeda is going. What kind of comments? Good? Bad? Is she pleased or disappointed?

I agree about the constant fighting. I made a comment on the Slipstream board several months ago about how the characters need to be developed more, so that we (the viewers) have a reason to care about them (other than blind fanism). This also goes along with having a common foe. Having a common foe gives us an opportunity to get to know the main characters, so that we aren't constantly spending the few minutes of air time we have trying to get to know another new kind of alien life. A couple new forms of life a year are plenty. I don't need to be introduced to everyone all at once. Anyway, I'm glad to see she feels similarly. I was pretty much ripped for this opinion on the Slipstream board. LOL!

Thanks for another great report! Of to read Sunday part 2!

Shhh,
Whisper
