A better way to protect your friends

Sorry, my friends, but when John did get my “Thank you” message, he sent me back a one sentence message:

One of my friends told me it wouldn't really work. Sorry...

I felt pretty bad that I had misled so many people by publishing his easy “fix.” I have my own procedure, which I know works for me, but requires a lot of work on my part. It is more difficult to install but ... well I will let you read the message I sent to my friend, John G. At least you can have something that is tried and true if you wish to use it. Here is the message:

JOHN G 011009 SURE FIRE DEAD END SIGN FOR WORM VIRUSES


Dear John:

I forgot to mention my own solution that I thought up a long time ago and published about a year ago some where. It requires more work than your "!000" fix. But there is no way a worm virus can get by my solution.

First open your address book and select any address. Then press CTRL + A to select all the addresses. Then press CTRL + C to copy them to the clipboard.

Next open a NEW FOLDER in MY DOCUMENTS under a cryptic name such as "A flower shop" and press CTRL + V to paste your entire address list in an address file with another cryptic name in that folder. Finally, go back to the address book and delete all the addresses [except the !000 AwormAlert ] from it. A worm virus can not go to addresses that do not exist. But your work is not over yet.

If you use Microsoft Outlook Express (R) , then when you open the inbox you will see a subsection of the window on the lower left called "Contacts." When a name pops up in there, it has been added to your address book. You need to follow the above procedure to move that address to your special file to protect that "friend." If it is one that you know is already in your special file, simply DELETE it from the address book.

This procedure has some advantages as well as disadvantages. One disadvantage is that you have to be alert to keep your address book empty [no addresses in the "Contacts" window, except for the "!000" which you leave there to get the warning as you specified in your original message to me.] The other disadvantage is that you have to go to your special file every time you want to forward messages to a group of friends. But the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

The main advantage is that it is SURE FIRE AND WORKS. Another advantage is that you can have as many files of selected groups to forward mail to under folders with identifying code names such as Relatives, Professionals, Friends, Club A, and so forth. One name can appear in as many categories as apply. Then when you want to send a bulletin to Club A, you can call up that list and paste it in your "To" box of your message.

AH !!! Now I think I remember where I published this information. Last year I sent this to all the students in my Spanish class at my college. Now I will use the next hours to publish this message to all the forums I sent your "fix" to. My solution is a lot of work, but I thought you had found a simpler fix. Yet, having published a "false" fix, I owe them something that works. Mine is a lot more work, but you know that to arrive at success, you have to jump through all the right hoops first.

On my computer, I have a folder in which are several address files including a master file and some special category files. In each list I inserted a character that is illegal in an e-mail address in each address on the list. This is in case a super intelligent worm virus can locate my lists, it would still not be able to use them because of the illegal characters, such as a colon [ : ] or pound sign [#].

Before I use the list, I paste it to a blank page in "Document1 ." Then I strip it of all the illegal characters using the FIND AND REPLACE function. Finally I copy the resulting list to the "To" box of the message window to send one message to all persons on the list. As I said, it is a lot of work, but no worm virus will get forwarded by me.

One more thing, I do not have my anti-virus program on my hard drive. When I need it, I call it up from my CD-ROM, which is called up by the RESTART program on my floppy drive A...

That way I do not have the creeping problem of the anti-virus program gradually slowing down my computer and eventually forcing a lot of "illegal procedure" messages for common operations such as saving a file, or copying a file from one place to another, or downloading a picture of the surface of Mars .

Believe me, I had those problems and the only way I got rid of them was to back up all files I wanted to keep, erase my hard drive completely, and then reformat it adding only those programs I wanted, leaving out Terminal-Stay-Resident programs like anti-virus programs.

Now everything works quickly, efficiently, and NO ERROR MESSAGES.

Your fix was simple to install and would not require maintenance. But as your friend told you, "It does not work." My solution requires a lot of maintenance, but it WORKS PERFECTLY. I hope we come up with a simple to install, no maintenance, solution that works, but until then, you can use mine.

I treasure your friendship, and I will never forget the days we worked together building and trouble shooting the Elwood long range ARSR-3 radar and when we flew together before I retired the second and last time. So, John, make your day a beautiful one !!!

P.S. Foristas, please refer to my previous post “A DEAD END SIGN FOR VIRUSES” to see John’s procedure. Install his change in your address book to become alerted to a worm virus in your own computer. Better yet, install it in the first three items using the SAME NAME “ !000,“ but with different e-mail addresses: “AwormAlert,” “AwormAlert2,” and “AwormAlert3,” but without the quotes, of course. The result is that the “outbox” program will freeze your computer with an error message. When you get that message, shut your computer off. Put an anti-virus program in your CD-ROM drive and your RESTART disk in Floppy drive “A.” From drive “A” you can call up the virus program on your CDROM drive. If you know what you are doing, you can protect your computer by backing up all your critical data, mostly in “MY DOCUMENTS.” I BURN IN A READ WRITE CD-ROM WITH ALL MY CRITICAL DATA ABOUT ONCE A MONTH WITH ONE OF A SERIES OF DISKS WITH THE INTENTION OF ROTATING THROUGH THEM. When I suspect a virus. I reformat my hard disk and reinstall all my programs, and finally, I reinstall any data I need, but keep on the CD-ROM that data I do not need. It is a sure fire protection, but requires about 4 hours of work because I have a very large hard drive. I also have a ZIP drive which comes in handy for backing up recent data that I do not want to get lost or corrupted. About every other year, I upgrade to a larger, faster hard drive. We have to develop methods to NEUTRALIZE their effect upon our WORLD COMMUNITY. It is a “stocking stuffer” for all FRIENDS. Install it in your computer to protect your friends, and send a copy to EACH of them, as an early Christmas present, to protect theirs.

I learned a computer trick today that's really ingenious in its simplicity.

As you may know, when/if a worm virus gets into your computer it
heads straight for your email address book and sends itself to everyone in
there, thus infecting all your friends and associates.

This trick won't keep the virus from getting into your computer, but it will stop it from using
your address book to spread further, and it will alert you to the fact
that the worm has got into your system.

Here's what you do:

first, open your address book and click on "new contact"
just as you would do if you were adding a new friend
to your list of email addresses.

In the window where you would type your friend's first name,
type in !000 (that's an exclamation mark followed by 3 zeros). In the
window below where it prompts you to enter the new email address,

type in WormAlert

Then complete everything by clicking add, enter, ok, etc.

Now, here's what you've done and why it works: the "name" !000 will
be placed at the top of your address book as entry #1. This will be
where the worm will start in an effort to send itself to all your friends.

But when it tries to send itself to !000, it will be undeliverable because of
the
phony email address you entered (WormAlert). If the first attempt fails
(which it will because of the phony address),
the worm goes no further and your friends will not be infected.

[[To get around a virus that looks for “!000” so it can reject it and go to the next address, pick a different name, such as “!000A.” Better yet, look at your list in your address book, if the first alphabetical entry is “AARON,” then use a name like “AAAA.” The purpose is to make it entry #1 in your address book, which automatically sorts all entries alphabetically. BE CREATIVE !!! Foil the hackers who write viruses! ***** MERRY CHRISTMAS ***** ]]

Here's the second great advantage of this method:

if an email cannot be delivered,
you will be notified of this in your InBox almost immediately.

Hence, if you ever get an email telling you that an

email addressed to WormAlert [[ or some other “phony” address ]]
that could not be delivered, you'll know you have a
worm virus, and can take action to rid yourself of it.

Pretty good.

Bárbara Mori: El rostro de la comedia romántica (México HOY)

Ciudad de México, 1 de octubre. Inspiración se encuentra en las salas cinematográficas del país, nada menos que con 150 copias y el apoyo incondicional de la distribuidora Twentieth Century Fox.

Hace ya más de seis meses que comenzó la promoción de la cinta Inspiración y, finalmente, este fin de semana el experimento regiomontano se encuentra en las salas cinematográficas del país, nada menos que con 150 copias y el apoyo incondicional de la distribuidora Twentieth Century Fox.

Con una historia sencilla, que se mueve en el mar de la comedia romántica sin grandes aspiraciones más que “entretener”, a decir de todos los involucrados, Bárbara Mori y Arath de la Torre se asoman al selecto grupo de los actores mexicanos que pueden ver su rostro, su trabajo y hasta sus fallas a gran escala, en la pantalla grande, pues.

Mori y De la Torre incursionan así en un medio largamente anhelado pero que, a decir de los resultados en pantalla, quizá no les abra las puertas definitivamente, a menos que la respuesta del público en taquilla a su romance cinematográfico sea mejor que la película misma.

Y es que los chicos no están mal... Ni exageradamente bien, pero con todo, son algo de lo más rescatable de esta cinta, hecha por su director veinteañero, Ángel Mario Huerta, con mucha Inspiración pero poco conocimiento del lenguaje cinematográfico y de los elementos a tomarse en cuenta para hacer una película, digamos, bien hecha.

Huerta, comunicólogo de profesión y cineasta por Inspiración, confesó en sus primeras entrevistas, hace ya varios meses, que sus conocimientos sobre dirección de cine eran bastante limitados y se autodenominó “autodidacta”, adjetivo que debería cambiar por el de “improvisado”, si es que quiere rayar la honestidad.

Lamentablemente, su espontaneidad no le da el talento, el oficio o siquiera el tino que muchos obtienen con la experiencia, así que sin la menor idea de dónde colocar un reflector, entrega una película donde el guión simplista, facilón, cursi y lleno de referencias de repostería —con los clásicos pastelazos gestados en la televisión—, es increíblemente lo más rescatable del producto.

Pero muchas veces la suerte puede más que años de estudio, y la capacidad de negociación atrae más dinero que el curriculum, ventajas que le sirvieron a Huerta y a su amigo y productor Rogelio González para conseguir la nada despreciable cantidad de un millón 300 mil dólares para levantar este proyecto cinematográfico.

Este mérito, aunado a la corta edad de Huerta y González —ninguno de los dos alcanza los 25 años—, hacen de Inspiración una cinta digna de verse, al menos por curiosidad y con la salvedad de saber que su promesa de entregar “una comedia romántica con la calidad de las que se hacen en Hollywood”, según habría dicho Huerta hace seis meses, es simplemente autocomplacencia.

Después de verla, extraña la manera en que se le ha apoyado y promocionado como lo nuevo, nuevo, nuevo del cine mexicano. Lo más joven y fresco, pues, acentuando siempre el hecho de ser producto de un esfuerzo norteño.

Parece, entonces, que tanta porra y tanto aplauso gratuitos son e l precio que el cine nacional, todavía en terapia intensiva luego de un largo periodo de sequía y lucha, está pagando por ser, como todo en este país, una industria centralizada.

México, D.F., 01 oct. (Hechos Espectáculos).- Tras su participación en la novela "Amores, querer con alevosía", el actor Christian Meier está de vuelta en la casa que lo vio nacer, su tierra azteca.

“Encontrarme con la gente que me dio la oportunidad de trabajar acá, de trabajar en la misma empresa que me adoptó durante este año y he vivido aquí, o sea que estoy bastante contento", nos dijo Christian al llagar a México.

Tv Azteca le dio la oportunidad de oro que esperaba tanto como cantante y como actor: “Me siento contento, por que lo que en un comienzo hice fue algo que debió de haber gustado, me siento muy orgulloso del trabajo que se hizo antes, me siento complacido de que me hayan vuelto a invitar".

Christian Meier quiere seguir cosechando éxitos, y se prepara para un nuevo reto, ya que hora se une al elenco de la telenovela "Lo que es amor": “Sólo sé que voy a salir de malo, que es muy malo. He hecho travesuras con mis personahjes pero nunca he encarnado a algun tipo malvado”.

Ya podrán volverlo a ver muy pronto a las 9 de la noche por Azteca 13.

Plutarco Haza debuta detrás de cámaras

México, D.F., 27 sept.(En Medio del espectáculo).- La “Lola enamorada”, es el titulo de uno de los capítulos de “Lo que callamos las mujeres” y en donde el día de ayer el actor Plutarco Haza debutó como director de televisión, logrando reunir a un gran elenco para esta historia, siendo Hector Bonilla y Ángelica Aragón, sus padrinos y quienes le dieran la patada de buena suerte.

También dentro del elenco nos encontramos a Cecilia Suárez quien vuelve a México y también esta a punto de debutar, pero en esta ocasión dentro de una cabina de radio.

Por su parte Plutarco se mostró muy contento, por cumplir un sueño más en su vida aunque quisiera dirigir telenovela o cine esto lo ve como un hecho a largo plazo.

Así que le deseamos lo mejor a un joven pero talentoso actor que detrás de cámaras sueña con ser el mejor director.

expresso perú hoy: Christian Meier volverá a las pantallas

Después de una corta salida del aire, la telenovela Amores querer con alevosía -que protagoniza Christian Meier- volverá a las pantallas de ATV a partir del lunes 8 de octubre. Esta vez en un horario más adecuado para las amas de casa: las 14:00 horas. La reestructuración en la programación que han hecho los ejecutivos de Canal 9 responden a que han visto necesario crear un horario estelar de telenovelas por la tardes. Así que a partir de las 14:00 horas veremos un trío de historias que comprenden a Amores, querer con alevosía, La baby sister y Las Juanas. Esta última gozó de buena sintonía hace un año y tiene en los roles estelares a las colombianas Angie Cepeda y Carolina Sabino.
Como se sabía, las dos primeras tramas no captaron las expectativas de los directivos de ATV que las colocaron en un horario nocturno, por eso decidieron que en su lugar se emitan películas en los especiales de Cinema ATV. Algo que ha resultado favorable ya que poco a poco, están captando sintonía.
