Checkboxes

On my listview control I'm using checkboxes but am unable to find out which ones are checked. I tried $did(dname,id).sel like the help file suggested, but it only returns $null (and only returns a value when a line is highlighted). I also tried .state which didn't work either. I'd appreciate it very much if someone could tell me what I'm doing wrong.
