I shoot mostly with slide film and have mostly used Kodachrome 64, but on my BWCAW last fall I used some Fujichrome 100 and was very pleased with the results. The reason I used Kodachrome was the labs that develop the film are lisenced by Kodak and are required to meet certain quality standards not enforced at Walmart etc. I took the Fuji to a local Foto 1 that I know the owner is always behind the machine (not a part time high schooler who read a 3 page book on how to run the machine). It costs a little more, but now I know I can always talk to the owner.
The reasons Gordon stated are the main reasons I use slide film: what you see is what you get; grain size; storage; etc.
Regarding the multiple format question. I had this problem too. Just about any developer I talked to will give you prints from your slides, it just costs like a buck each on top of the slide developing. Same goes for the digital version, because they want to scan the positive print. I wound up buying a multi format scanner that does 11X17 pages, pictures, and slides. The scans of slides are more than adequate for web publishing, but you would probably lose to much quality to go to a print. They do make specialized slide scanners but they cost from a $100 more to hundreds more, and I was willing to compromise cause I just wanted to share them on the web.
Here's an example
Hope this helped
