This photo was taken in the late 1980s in the Badlands of South Dakota. We had driven through the hottest time of the day -- and it had been a really hot and dusty day -- coming into the Badlands from the south. We were caked with dust (no air conditioning), the inside of the car was caked with dust...
That evening it was still warm, but as the sunset it grew considerably cooler and we began to hike the ridges. This photo is of a friend standing on top of the ridge watching the sun going down. When I realized that I might be able to position the setting sun in the notch, I scurried into position and shot the scene with a 300mm. Fortunately, my pal moved into just the right position for the shot.
