While I enjoy taking scenics, wildlife really gets me excited. The first photo is of a Dall sheep ram moving across a valley, probably from its summering area to its wintering area. (Winter wasn't far off in mid- to late-August.) The ram would run as fast as it could for about a hundred yards and then stop stock still for up to five minutes as it scanned the area ahead, presumably for wolves and bears. Then it break into a full gallop for another hundred yards. It was obviously not happy at having to be in the flats between two mountains. He finally made the far mountain and as soon as he got to the cliffs, he became more relaxed and began feeding.
This second photograph is of a couple of caribou on the east end of the Denali Highway, maybe 25 miles west of Paxon, Alaska. The Nelchina herd of caribou, about 40,000 animals were migrating through at about this time in groups of 10 to 15 animals. The brush, however, was so high that they usually couldn't be seen except when they crossed the unmaintained road or when they were crossing open ground.
