While I have heard of this maxim, I am not sure I understand it fully. Would anyone care to expound on it in greater detail?
TIA

A picture is worth a thousand words?

Draw imaginary lines over your scene such that you divide the picture into thirds horizontally and thirds vertically as follows:

The rule of thirds unveiled

Where the lines intersect (circles) are the points where the main elements of a picture should be placed.

An example....

Here's that Isabella River picture with the lines drawn on it. Notice that the canoe is placed at the lower left intersection, while the leading lines take you to the upper right intersection (red circles). Also notice that the horizon lies basically along the upper horizontal (blue) line.

Rule of Thirds Example

Hope this helps!

Perfect!

A verbal description just wasn't getting me there.
Your graphical explanation is just what I needed.

It is really quite simple. I think I was trying to make it too complicated.

Thanks!

Yes, I made it.

It is kind of my graphic moniker. I am not all that artistic though. It "evolved" over a period of a year.
It is the raven stealing the moon.

Very nice!

Can you create one that involves a moose stealing a yoke pad?

(Wouldn't you know I'd be the first to drag something off topic?)

I have to ask.

Did that happen to you?

Where was this taken?

Hey Larry,

Exactly where was this picture taken? It says Isabella River. Is this this end of the portage coming off of Isabella Lake?

Sort of...

March 3 2002, 1:23 PM

... it was actually taken just a little south of the actual portage... we landed at the wrong spot, headed toward Isabella Lake. Joined the real portage via the hiking trail. But, yes, it was taken in that general area.
