Some Critique for a "Green" Photographer

What a concept for a Message Board!

I hope to add much to this site as I develop my skills, however, for now I am asking for some critique of some of my work.

This was taken near Lower Basswood Falls in the BWCA as the mist began to give way to the morning sun.

This was our last night out in the BWCA. My brother-in-law was getting in some last minute shore fishing.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Madl

The essential BWCAW experiences.....

April 6 2002, 1:27 PM

...is sitting in rays thrown by a setting sun and watching the sun come up over a foggy lake with pine strewn islands looming into view. If those evocative elements make for great art, you've got some really nice stuff here.

You may share, perhaps, one trait that I've got and that is the longer I'm in the BW, the more likely my photo horizons are likely to tilt. It appears to me that the horizon in the sunrise photo tilts a bit to the right; the same direction my horizons tend to tilt when I get tired. I'd straighten that out. I'd also crop a bit off the bottom and right so the horizon isn't quite so centered; may add some dramatic impact to an already nice photograph. Try it and see what you think.

The silhoutte photo too is very nice. I'd add a bit of contrast to darken the dark areas a bit, but that might just be my monitor and it's already fine on yours. The lines on the canoe add a very nice element.

By the way, did he catch any fish?

Both very nice photos...

Looks good

April 7 2002, 8:10 PM

I find that when my camera is close by I'm always looking for that special shot. It's something that you never know when it will present it's self. It's key to learn the right light conditions and camera settings. It looks like you are on your way to some great photo moments. I've missed some of the best shots of my life simply because I didn't have the camera with me. I shoot just to see if I can get some of lifes better moments down on film. I do it for fun and for free as I'm a welder by profession. Good Luck.

Thank you!

Thanks for the comments and advice on my photos. I am on a different computer today, and when I look at these photos on this monitor, they look much darker - OH WELL!

I look forward to seeing some shots from other contributors to this board. I went back through some of the archived photos and they looked really good - evoking a lot of thought and sparking the photographic imagination.

Thanks again.
