Dale Labs thread revisited

June 7 2002, 10:47 PM

At Nibi's suggestion, I'm moving this conversation to this board from the CCBB ( www.canoecountry.com/bulletinboard )

Based on his previous posts, I sent a couple of rolls of film to Dale Labs for processing - prints, slides and photo CD's all from print film. I'm pretty pleased with the results with a couple of minor complaints. One, a couple of the shots have obvious dust marks on them from the negatives. Two, both shots #25 on my 24 exposure roll were "cropped" by adhesive they put at the ends of the roll, and were not included on the photo CD. Overall, the quality of the processing was quite good though. Nice color saturation on the prints too.

Questions....

June 8 2002, 11:45 AM

1) Are the shots you posted on the CCBB, and here, taken off the CD?

2) How did the slides turn out? Have you taken shots with slide film before and, if so, how (in general) did the Dale Labs slides from print film compare with slides from slide film you've had in the past -- in terms of color, saturation, and contrast?

3) Where'd you come up with all the money to do slides, prints, and CD's Dale Labs ain't cheap to do all 3!

1) Yes, all shots posted on both boards are from the CD, with minor tweaks on Microsoft Photo Editor for color and contrast. The shots on the CD are .pcd files which I then saved as .jpg files.

2) Near as I can tell the slides turned out great. I haven't compared them side by side to "real" slides yet, but they look very similar to the naked eye, just holding them up to the light.

3) Yeah, it's a bit expensive at $20/roll. I'll probably only do this when I feel like I might have gotten some shots worth submitting. I think I've said before it's my goal to get a picture or two into BWJ.

I have been looking at this picture...

...for a while thinking about how to crop it differently or if it could have been framed differently and I've concluded it is perfect as is.

The long stretch of water in the foreground and the "high" sky add a great perspective to this shot. The centering of the rocks and distant shore provide a dramatic feel and contrast.

Thanks Beaglefur!

Aww shucks...

...that's awfully nice of you. It's a bit embarrassing actually - I had to do major cropping to get this one because either my camera strap or my hand got into part of the frame. It did turn out though...

Does that mean it was originally...

...a horizontal shot?

Turned out great!
