Cacti in bloom -- part 2

Here's a plant (not sure if it's correct to call it a cactus) that I'd never heard of before. I've heard that most of the year it's just a bunch of dead looking twigs with very scary looking thorns. In the spring, it sprouts the very attractive flowers shown in the photos. In the rainy season (late summer), it sprouts leaves which gradually drop off as things dry out again. Very strange...

It was very difficult to take this last picture since the slightest breath of air makes these plants sway wildly. For some reason, I couldn't find an assistant willing to hold a stem still while I took the picture .

All the shots were taken with Kodak Gold 100 film. A polarizer was used. Exposure not recorded.

I love that close up. Did you use a macro for that?

Not a true macro...

but, a close focusing 28-70 mm zoom set at 70 mm. I also "cheated" by doing a 2x digital enlarging/cropping job on the 'puter.

It's soooo pretty in the spring. (I used to live in Arizona)

Glad to see some stuff showing up on the board again!
