Using Fill Flash

Greetings Board!

I hope you don’t mind my wading in here with my (gulp!) digital photography stuff. I lost my last real camera in a backwater of the Little Indian Sioux a two years ago and before I could replace it I was tempted and hooked by the digital technology. Although the quality of pictures and capabilities of my first digital could hardly compare to that of the old Pentax SLR, when I lost the digital (to the same river) I sorely missed it and knew that I would not likely be going back to film. Now I have two cameras; one that I mostly use and one that I like to keep safely tucked away in a waterproof case when I’m not on solid dry ground. Here’s a picture I shot in October 02 on the portage into Lower Pauness Lake. One nice thing about digitals is that you can use trial and error methods with immediate analysis in the field. In this case the first shot was unsatisfactory because I had disabled the flash to save batteries. The canoe appeared in deep shadow. Then I set for forced flash, raised the canoe out of view, half-pressed for exposure on the distant landscape, trimmed the canoe again, and finished the shot. Then the sunlight got brighter so I searched through my still unfamiliar menus to reset the white balance from overcast to sunny and repeated the exposure routine and took the shot again. I added the final touch a few moments ago using The fill flash tool in Adobe Photoshop Elements to slightly brighten the in the foreground.

Looks fine to me.

I have also been getting familiar with a digital. It cant do everything my 35 could, but is is handy. One problem I've encountered is that my computer crashed and all my photos vanished. I will most likely put my keepers on floppys from now on.

digital vs. film

I've never shot digital, but have been watching it develop over the course of the last couple of years and I was curious about your statement that your digital can't do everything that your 35mm can do. Can you elaborate on this a bit?

Thanks,

Gordon Dietzman

What I mean is

December 29 2002, 8:10 PM

my digital is a basic point and shoot type. My 35 and I were able to make time exposers, adjust apature, focus and set for film etc. also was able to use telefotos, double exposier etc. Now I point and shoot thru a view finder that is not thru the lens and shots are often ofset, I cannot take close ups. Most shots turn out fine, but I like a little artistic freedom!
