Campsite on Homer Lake
This shot was taken towards the west end of Homer Lake over the 2000-2001 New Year's weekend.
Although just barely a mile or two into the Boundary Waters, we had to ski about 6 miles to get to this campsite -- first along an unplowed road and then across Homer Lake. Although there were snowmobile tracks nearby, we never saw or even heard any of those machines, or indeed any other person for the 3 days/2 nights we were there.
We did hear wolves and saw tracks -- including fresh ones not too far away from camp the day we left. The campsite was surrounded with spruces, covered with fresh snow which made for several winter wonderland pictures. Clear, sunny skies also helped. As can be seen from the shadows, this shot was taken not long after sunrise while I was waiting for the water to boil for my breakfast.
I don't know about anyone else but, this picture gets me chomping at the bit for winter camping season to get here. Although I don't yet have any definite plans, I can't wait to get out there!
From a photographic point of view, I kind of wish I'd moved the blue tarp (under which lies my toboggan) out of the picture and moved the snow shoes closer to the tent and maybe tightened up the shot a little. But, this was one of those, "hey, that looks kinda neat" type of shots and I didn't bother going back to work on the set up -- remember, I hadn't had breakfast yet
