Education isn't just about training for a job - its a bigger topic than that. I decided to work outside of the Equine industry, but I am taking a distance-learning HND in Equine Studies as an 'interest'. I can then convert this to a degree later.
I keep my own horse, and have freedom to decide when to compete, how to look after him etc, which seems to be rare for a 'groom'. I have worked for a couple of years with horses, and decided it was too limiting. If horsey HNDs and Degrees had been available I would have taken them, but not necessarily expected them to lead to a grooms job - they may have been a first step to Veterinary Nursing, or some other related career.
What I'm saying is don't knock a degree just 'cos many jobs are for grooms - a good groom needs to know a lot too!. The financial rewards issue, however, is a big problem, especially for people looking to advance their earnings with experience.
My primary motivation is sheer learning!.
Issy. I read your message with interest. I have been thinking of taking an HND for some time. I read up on several courses and have spoken to some of the course providers but find it difficult to decide which course I should do. You sound pretty happy withyour lot.
I have gained a degree and post graduate qualifications too so Im no stranger to the study aspect
I have a 16.1 hh 4 year old entire sport horse called Paddy. I started him myself and have to say Im pleased with the results so far. I have raised him since he came off his mother so we have a special relationship. This is not really relevant to my question.
Would you mind providing me with your response to the following;
How are you coping with the HND outside of a normal job?
Is it what you expected and did you do any foundation work/course before starting the HND.
How many hours a week do you study?
Where did you sign up for your distance learning course?
Did you study before at college?
This learning for the sake of learning is supposed to be fun. Are your tutors friendly and available?
Thanks
