I completely agree with the comments made. Horses do not have a gall bladder, which as most people probably know stores bile, therefore the liver which produces bile, constantly secretes it to the stomach so in approximately eight hours, if your horse has not eaten the stomach walls start being eaten away, which must be rather painful. Also chewing helps relax the horse so if they are eating, they are not getting stressed. So many behavioural problems and stereotypies are caused by lack of food and boredom. I feed my horses ad lib hay, my argument being that at least if they are eating then they have something to do. Lorraine. |
