Due to the inevitable wastage factor inherent in breeding and training thoroughbred horses for racing, in the region of 5,000 horses leave the racing industry annually. Whilst some filter down through other equestrian fields, many end up in the downward spiral of the saleroom where there is no control over their destination. It is not only the mediocre or failed racehorse that finds itself in this position - professional, prizewinning racehorses can also confront this fate when their ability to race has diminished. This is often an ignominious end to a hard working career in the service of sport and entertainment.
The TRC provides an environment of safety and experienced quality care where these horses can be assessed and re-educated. The horses are given time to adjust and relax before they are asked to rethink their way of working. Horses that have been trained purely to race often find this difficult and the TRC makes this transition as pleasant and productive as possible.
When a horse has reached a sensible, contented conversion it becomes available for rehoming. Even then, the TRC horses remain our property and are loaned out to people under specific conditions to protect the horse. These loan homes are monitored for the rest of the horse's life.
