I could certainly be wrong on this one but my feelings have been that the FS started running out of funding years ago. Lots would be saved by having... portages that they wouldn't have to clear, latrines that wouldn't have to be relocated when full and fire grates that would never have to be replaced. Think of all the PMA's, with all the portages that WERE there, with all of the camp sites which WERE there. These were the less used areas years ago so let's make them PMA's and save a bundle! I have not only been thanked by forest service officials, but by the 'grunts' as well for any volunteer work accomplished. This tells me that their work load is a little overwhelming, even WITH the volunteer help.
I like PMA's, but when there is a lot of distance to be traveled between lakes, and eventually no path to travel regardless of downed trees and brush, then I feel that they should come up with a new plan that would at least let volunteers do SOME clearing. The way that I see it, there is now only an easy way out by creating yet more PMA's to make ends meet.
This season at saw class I asked an official from the Tofte District if it would take an act of congress to re-open the no longer used Lac La Croix Trail. He said "No. It would take an act of God"
If a bug is planted now then in twenty years, things might start changing.
