I have to agree with you on 99% of your points.

But PMA does stand for "primitive management area" which seems to indicate some kind of management - ie primitive - rather than none at all which you indicate. That management should be minimal at best but maybe it means something along the lines of what Orygoner posted above referring to at least keeping a bit of a spot on the trail? I don't really know and with funding priorities and lack of funds altogether, maybe PMA should be labeled NMA - no management area.

Also, I think Bogs' reference to PMA trails is actually the fact that these PMAs were once portage accessible areas like the rest of the BW, but their change to PMA designation has let these once well travelled trails be overgrown.

I envy your PMA travels and hope to do some PMA soloing someday.
