Everyone’s mileage varies

by tick (Login tick54)

Although I have never went in on Lake One and came out of Snowbank, I have gone from Lake One to Insula in one day and also from Snowbank to Thomas in one day. With just paddling and portaging the loop from Lk One to Snowbank could be done in 3 days.

I have an excel spread sheet set up to plug in different walking, paddling speeds ect. and this will give you a good idea of how long a trip will take with steady travel. I calculate trip times by taking the miles to paddled and multiplying by 3 mph. For single portaging I figure a speed of 2.5 MPh (800 rods per hour) plus 5 min for loading and unloading plus a 5 min break at each 100 rods of the longer portages. A 100 rod portage will then take 12.5 minutes. A 320 rod will take 39 minutes. For double portaging multiply the single trip by 2 and add the walk back time. A 100 rod portage will then take 32.5 minutes and a 320 rod will take 102 minutes.

I would normally plan on doing a maximum of 6 hours per day or less at these rates of travel as you can easily add another 2 hours of rest breaks etc. during the day. I used to figure that a day that included 10 miles of paddling and a mile of portaging was a pretty normal and easy day.
