it does seem a bit much just to go camping and fishing. However it is the way it is.
If you have a passport you do not need a birth certificate.
If you do not have a passport and think you might want to travel outside the US I would ahead and get the birth certificate and passport now.
A certificate of live birth from the hospital is not a birth certificate from the State Health Department
Check with your local Health Department if you live in the state you were born in. They should be able to print you a copy and save some handling and mailing cost.
If you no longer live in the state you were born then gooogle birth certificate and the state name. The state Health Department website should come up and you follow the online instructions to get your certificate.
Since 2000 employers are required to see your birth certificate or a passport. In Missouri and most other states you now have to have a birth certificate or passport to renew or to get your drivers license. It is called the Real ID act. Women that have a name different than what is on the Birth certificate ( most married women) must show copies of marrage license, or a current passport with their married name. Some must show divorce paperwork as well. To show -track every name change they have had. It is a huge pain.
I work at a local Health Department and we get 20 to 30 request a day for birth certificates- most just because the drivers license is expiring.
Not sure if this was all supposed to cut down on illegal immigration or make us all safer from terrorist. Since I am starting to get OT. I will get off the box and go sit down now.
