There is still a great blue heron rookery there.....

but some years ago there was a significant drop in the number of active nests. At least some herons found new places to nest (maybe a political or G.W. disagreement ?). Another possible reason, a short distance downstream from Cold Spring, on the right bank there is a large chicken (or turkey) processing facility. I don't know the "quality" of their liquid discharge but it stinks like h**l when I last floated the through. From then on, I enter at the county road just outside Rockville where there is a nice landing and "deck" built, as I recall, an eagle scout project, or something similar. But, if you start here, watch out for a "sweeper" off the left bank a short paddle downstream.
