Pine bay portage out of Pickeral
then flat walk to Dore' lake
then the Portage de mort
then twin lakes and the river to upper sturgeon
I think it beats the "B" chain for speed but not waterfall beauty...
IMO...more scenic and fastest way to Russell. No long (although easy) portage like the Fern route. Some years Twin rivers is low. I've never had a problem traversing it. Almost always will be some beaver dam pull overs or scoot overs...they are usualy fast. Again, IMO, it's the best route to see moose.
Quicker route from Stanton bay...over to Emerald isle and S to Pine portage bay. If you come from Nym/Batch...I believe Upper Sturgeon near Blueberry isle is about 21 paddling miles from the Nym parking lot. I've done Russell in 1 long day this route, but a late arrival precludes a good camp on this busy lake. Prefer to hold up in upper Sturgeon and hit Russell early. Best Walleye fishing spot in all of the Q by my limited opinion.
Here's the best of both worlds...IMO.
...Duex Rivers inbound
...Fern and the "B's" outbound
