Minnesota DNR planning a wolf season.....

by Charles Eckroth (Login ToughOldBird)

The morning papers contained an article that the DNR is planning for a wolf season for this coming fall. It will require legislative action. The DNR estimates there are some 3,000 wolves in MN at this time. They propose to sell about 300 licenses and expect to "harvest" 400 wolves by hunters. The Star-Trib article also mentioned that 200 (maybe it was 300) are already being killed because of predation on farm animals. Using these figures, they would tolerate some (400 + 200) harvested annually from a total of 3,000 wolves. That's a loss of 600/3000 or 20% each season. The Tribune dded that the number killed would probably not exceed the births in a year. But, since in most packs, there's only one breeding pair, I wonder if their figures are realistic.

Those who know more about wolves than I do, or have access to a more thorough description of the numbers are welcome to add their own comments.
