Horse River trip

by (Login Kodaska)

Hi Geo,

Like others, I can't help you on the Falls Chain side of your comparison, but I can tell you that going down the Horse River last spring was a piece of cake. As I recall, there were three easy portages and no beaver dams. The Lower Basswood portage is easy and fairly short - maybe 30-35 rods - beginning with a nice beach and ending with a rock shelf where you can take your pick of launch points.

If you go into Iron Lake, be sure to visit Rebecca Falls. It's in Canada, but part of Iron Lake. I suggest you avoid the Beartrap River, since it's in a PMA and nearly impassable. Also, the Moosecamp River is known for its many beaver dams. Best bet is to come down through Gun. The two portages at the south end of Fourtown are really tough. The first, shorter one has a 10-foot vertical climb at the start; and the longer one is called Heart Attack Ridge for a reason.

Have a great trip, whatever you do!
