Martial arts ranking

How do you all feel about ranking? I have seen some not so good black belts and black sashed fighters that were missing quite abit. It seems to me that they were more concerned with getting the ranking than fully understanding the techniques they were taught. I see a problem with that and I do not believe in using any type of ranking in the system I founded. How important is rank to you? How important was it to Bruce? Seems to me it wasn't, but I could be wrong. I have afew high ranks and they do not mean much to me at all.

It does give some sort of direction and the sense of accomplishment, but that should be less as important as the desire to be the best at your way. And you can have alot of direction towards being good at the art you study instead of concentrating on rank! And that is more important to be proud of!!

Rankings

I know little kids are really motived with rankings and it helps to keep them coming back and some adults too. I think its a good accomplishment to get a high rank in any system even if the only true benifit is good exersize or faster reflexes.

If you can perform and you KNOW you can perform (because you have DONE so), who needs then, someone else to tell you (by giving you rank) that you can?

Is it that some folks feel a "need to show" others through the use of "symbol" (the 'black' belt) that they can peform? If so, why?

What does showing others that you can peform, through ways OTHER than through the very act of performance accomplish?

I think the teory of ranking is good.BUT ONLY IN THEORY. now i have seen people get black belts and quit because they think that they are the $#!t. From whati have seen, belts seem to be given for the fact that it produces money.Parents want to see their kids looking cute and diciplined, and uniforms and belts give that impression. To me. belts dont matter. If you are better than someone in your school, so what?? do you need a belt to prove it?? If you do, you do not have enough confidence in yourself and you need a belt to help you. The important thing is what you have learned and what you can do. Cause if you coudnt even fight you way out of a kindergarden, who the hell cares what color belt you wear.

i think ranking should be done but only be done for yourself, it helps and makes the system of martial art styles more organized but in some schools they over do the ranking system and make it such a great achievement and gives the student a false sense of confidense .. for example if a student goes to classes every now and then and does not really study and he can learn technics in class and forget them later and still can be given a belt then i think it is bad but when a student goes to class as much as he can and he studies alot and trains constintly and has the same belt as the student that does not study much then that is a reason why i would agree to dismiss the ranking

lol (to the last post).

I have been to a few classes where the belts system was offered. I did not take them because it meant I had to pay for the grading, which quite frankly was extortionate. So I did not bother. However, I ended up going to a class where the teacher told you what belt standard you were when you reached that level, at which point you could buy your own belt from the shop if you wanted to, he did not reall care. For him the belt system helped him to know what standard people wher so he could teach them accordingly.

Fundamentally though belts mean nothing. My teacher used to say, that "it is the blackbelt in your heart that is important". I believe in this whole heartedly as I have felt this in all the pointless other styles I praticed.

Question everything, Know nothing.
