just your own comments guys it could be positive or negative.. do you think a person can be better than bruce lee if he trained jkd for a much longer time?i mean bruce conceptualized the system and method.. but he also did say that jeet is ever evolving.. it doesnt mean after he passed away that we should keep jkd the way it was it should evolve and adapt.. so if bruce made and studied jkd for only maybe less than 5 years(dont know how long exactly) do you think if somebody did it much longer like 15 years straight and had the same determination and trained daily,do you think he would surpass bruce? just a question

Being that Bruce Lee was just a man then it is very possible for someone to surpass him both in physical prowess and skill. I'm sure that there are tons of people out there who have already surpassed Bruce Lee in both of those qualities but being that Bruce Lee is no longer with us, we can only guess as to how much better that person may or may not be. Bruce Lee's personal Jeet Kune Do was always evolving to suit his own personal goals. Had he lived, I'm sure he would have addapted more skills and techniques to his own personal training. What his death caused was a halt to the growth of his skill and his martial art. So yes, any person who has the will and determination, as well as the knowledge can and would be able to surpass Bruce Lee in many areas of the martial art.

To be as good or better than Bruce Lee takes a special kind of person. It's not impossible but it's very unlikely. You would first of all have to be very smart, creative, and innovative to take the art to new levels and keep adapting and changing the art to keep up with the times and to be at the head of the food chain martial arts wise so to speak. You would have to have no job so you can spend your entire day with martial arts, researching and training. You would have to be an extrememly obsessive person to be the best in the world, have a heart of gold, never accept defeat, and be willing to win any fight at all costs. You would need a lot of money to buy all that equipment he had and surround yourself with top martial arts experts and beginners to have a diversity in training partners. You would have to have hundreds if not thousands of books to know what he read, knew, and more. Are there people out there like this? Yes, they exist. How many? Not very many at all. There's only a handful of people in the entire world that would have the combined attributes and resources that the man had. Not to mention the man's brain which was extraordinary. So unless your name is Jiyasa, you have no chance. LOL

Seeking to be better than someone is a pointless goal.
Seeking just to be better daily is a much more rewarding goal.
What we can learn from Bruce is to seek to be the best you personally can be everyday.
I know some people who complain when their car breaks down on the highway and have to walk for a few miles...when there are people who can't walk who would give anything to be able to do so. Be happy with what you have and are capable of doing and continually seek to improve all of your attributes and capabilities.

I totally agree with James. JKD is about living a rewarding life and pursue your goals. Most importantly to discover and understand yourself as an indivdual and not to compare with anyone.
If you want to know anyone is better than Bruce Lee, You should ask anyone/yourself that who since BL's death has been compared to him. I would say none.. it's been 30+ years. no one could move like him, hit like him, and think like him.

Hello Everyone!
Good answers all the way around here! I would like to say that you should not strive to be as good as Bruce Lee, but to be as good as you personally can be! Some do not have Bruce Lee's attributes, physique or ferocity for training! It's just a simple fact! Most of us have too much on our minds and too many things to worry about on a day to day basis (job, bills, relationships, children, etc.) to be as dedicated as Bruce Lee was to training. Martial arts (specifically Jeet Kune Do) is my fulltime activity, yet even I cannot devote the amount of time to training that Bruce Lee did. I am working toward that point, but I am not there yet! By working to become your personal best, who knows, one day you may realistically be able to pass Bruce Lee's skill level! Has anyone done that yet, especially in all areas of Bruce Lee's accomplishments? No, I don't think so! Is it possible? To that, I would have to say YES! You just have to work, and work, and work with the attitude of never giving up! Dedication and attitude are the key words here! With those two qualities, anything is possible!
Keep Blasting!

I got this info from another forum. I would post the link but I'm not sure if it's allowed to give a link to a competing forum. I tried to log on to said forum inorder to ask the guy posting it where he got the info but even after signing up I couldn't post a reply. Anywho, I thought this sort of fit in to this thread.
Jesse R. Glover, Bruce Lee's first student and assistant-instructor - extracts from various conversations:
"The basic thing in doing Bruce's stuff is that one has to have the speed and power needed to do it. Some of the world's prime sportstars could do what Bruce did and maybe even do it better. Generally they aren't interested in martial arts. Such a prime person could be taught the mechanics of fighting in a few weeks or months....I have never seen anyone do what Bruce did in terms of the techniques that he used but I have seen a few people who have the speed and power to do effective techniques in their own way....The best message from Bruce is to take any art and subject it to the same process that he did. You take a style, you learn the basic moves of the style and then you try to eliminate unneeded moves and look for a quicker and better way to do what the style does. That is what makes a good or great martial artist....The name JKD is just what Bruce called the process that he did....Going straight to the target with the most that you can deliver isn't a new concept it is just one that most people haven't carried as far as Bruce did....It itsn't hard to figure out what Bruce did but it is hard to train like Bruce....Most people don't train like Bruce. Their training on speed and power isn't close to the time that Bruce spent on speed and power....part he was born with and the rest was due to repeated training of the same moves. Whenever he reached his maximum level of speed and power he introduced something new much along the lines of resistance training in weight lifting....When he first talked about the name JKD he was into fencing and he talked a lot about stop hits. Later in his career I don't think that he was that good with the stop hit idea against some people who were quick and had little telegraph....Bruce got hit a few times [in sparring] by people like Louis Delgado and Dan Lee. This isn't something he would later risk in a fight....In the later fights that he had he didn't fake he just launched an attack. Not much of a fight, one punch in Japan and one kick in Hong Kong. No faking, just a one shot attack. He told Herb Jackson about Hong Kong and an actor who was in Japan said that he saw Bruce knock a challenger out with one punch....Bruce could close with the speed of a world class fencer....UNLESS SOMEONE FELT what Bruce could do they have no idea what the man was capable. There just aren't that many people who can hit as fast or as hard as Bruce could. As for the power of his kicks he could drop a board from his hand and break it with a side kick. He could also kick a 300 lbs bag so hard that whoever was standing behind it in an attempt to prevent it from going backwards was knocked backward. Four years ago I was talking to Herb Jackson who was the guy who made a lot of Bruce's equipment. He was in Hongkong visiting Bruce and Bruce told him that a guy had come over his wall into his yard to challenge him and that it made him so mad that he had kicked the guy with all of the force that he could generate. He kicked the guy once in the chest and the guy was unable to stand for over half an hour...There are people in professional sports who with a little technique could be better than Bruce, but they aren't interested in martial arts....Football halfbacks and fullbacks who can move faster than Bruce. Weightlifters and powerlifters who can thrust several hundred pounds upward faster than anyone else moved in the olympics. Basketball players who could move out Bruce with their speed and who have tremendous hand speed - to mention a few players. If such people got into martial arts they would change our view of what is fast and what is powerful....Noone has recorded the reaction times of most of these people because there isn't any practical reason for doing. But Bruce couldn't close ground as fast as a world class track man and I read where some of the basketball guys that he played with could get out of the way..."

I think some people are missing a big point here,Bruce Lee did what he did and got to where he got from knowing himself and never stopped learning, he always sought the truth and never compared himself to anybody or tried to be better than anybody but better himself everyday. Now before he died he was way ahead of his time and much likely he would now still be ahead of his time because he belived life was an ever changing procces.Would anybody that trained jkd twice as much as Bruce be better than him? maybe his/her fighting skills would be but the real JKD as Bruce intended it requires more than fighting skills it requires compleat self knowledge" ULTIMATELY ALL KNOWLEDGE MEANS SELF KNOWLEDGE"is there people that have the same self control as he did ? sure but we'll problably never know because someone like him would not belive to have selfcontrol/knowledge because they will always be on their own never ending proccess.
I think that some people forget how much time and commitment Bruce's acting career (in the later years)took from his ability to train, and the fact that no one says young forever. You could see it in his photos from his last movie. The man look tired and especially the scene with the snake; he was so thin. Compare that with the explosiveness from the second film.
Training is a full time job. Add to that Bruce's long hours choreagraphing countless fight scenes, his acting responsibilities, his writing plots, directing the third movie, and the burdens of superstar, you see that Bruce would have had little time to train for a real fight. He died working over a script. Like Mosart, he probably worked himself to death.
But he was part myth. He always put himself into the role of superhero. And in this he successfully created a legend. His charisma was real and he successfully brought east and west together in the martial arts and in his persona. After all, he was one-quarter German.
But in his younger years he was definately the martial arts innovator.
But a man's physical stamina starts to go down around the age 33 and after 40 you are usually too old for prime competition. No professional sports figure hangs around long after they turn 40.
I think that a young person however with the desire of excellence could become like Bruce. But no one can repeat his role with the wit, flair and grace that Bruce had. Unless it comes from God. Bruce will always be a Legend because men need such figures, a link betwwen two ages and two cultures and this takes nothing away from the fact that Bruce was part myth.
In his day he was the most superbly trained and innovative martial artist. He was also a born actor.

Damm guys. You guys really have tunnel vision when it comes to Lee. I agree he was an outstanding figure in martial arts. But tell me how many world championship tournaments did he win? And yes there were plenty in those days maybe not in America, but believe me there is a world outside the states. Hell he could have fought in the Thai fights against the best there whilst he was filming big boss.
You only have to read books like the "book of five rings" by Myamoto Mushashi to realize that what Bruce Lee said a few decades ago was merely a reiteration of what has been said by countless great martial artists over the millenia. The above book is one that is widely available and only because 400 hundred years ago Mushashi learned the art or writing. He was an undeafeted swordsman. They used to fight to the death in them days. The fact that he was alive at fifty meant he was bad ass.
I have mentioned elsewhere Lee's lack of knowledge within grappling is distinctly apparent in game of death. This is an entire area of combat that he was weak in. His kicking technique was not the best I have seen either (gonna have to take my word for it, personal experience), by this I do not mean flashy kicks.
I do agree with the above statements that one should not look to someone else. You should push yourself to beat yourself for there is infinite potential there. Of course it is nice to have benchmarks for reference.
Anyway I know this is a JKD forum, but hopefully you will not get offended if I am not as awe struck with lee as you or even as I once used to be.

In fact when Bruce was alive many people were better then he at The M/A aspect. Now better at JKD he was it. And a very good M/A. And if someone would go on and become better at The asorbed use of JKD then he . I am sure he would be glad. That at least they strived to make and do within the JKD form of gunfu be able to do all they could. Like many M/A over the countless times You can only offer your time and Knowledge to othwers what they find and can use from it both in mind and body. Is alll you can hope for. The person THe student is tommorow the future of all that is taught today. And yes it can be improved on But not forgoten If learned. You have yet to see any clones in JKD But each has gone so far. How far we go is us and us alone. Today 30 years after his death Who can beat him. THE truth is we can not beat a non alive person. Just learn from them what was handed down. And strive to be our self. Good luck with that. Knowledge is in learning and doing not In dreaming and thinking
