This is what Jeet kune do is to me.. December 8 2003, 12:32 AM
Skill = (intellect X physique X dedication) + training divided by time.
Jeet kune do- Not a classified martial art nor is it an eclectic one. it is not a combination of existing martial arts that are placed together in a haphazard manner. though it has has strong influences from western boixing, wing-chun kung fu, and fencing.
jeet means stop or to intercept. it is more of a pricinple or philosophy rather than a new branch of martial atrs. the basic priciples are directness, simplicity, honesty, adoptive scientific and realistic mental attitude. The basic concepts are scientific, in which to most may seem idealistic, because of the complexities in terms. but in fact scientific approach is simpler and explainable than philosophy. it is just a matter of understanding the "terms"
Directness - quickest way from point A to point B is a straight line. Nothing is Faster than a straight line.
Speed - Speed X distance is equal to acceleration. Any object subjected to acceleration is bound to produce force multiplied to its proportioned mass, will then equal to a proportioned power. Thus speed X mass is equal to force
Body mechanics - To maximize striking force, proper incorporation of mass is a requirement. And to accomplish this proper body mechanics is a must. this concept is shown through out training..
Non telegraphic - Simply giving no prior movement to indicate that a strike is to be delivered. A change in the environment is sensed by the eyes, is then processed by the brain then a physical reaction materializes. This is what we call reaction time. This delay in the person's ability to react on time is exploited by a non-telegraphic movement. For a movement to become a non-telegraphic one it should be fast and swift, there should not be a movement prior to the wanted task that may indicate the intention. This concept is greatly connected to the other three concepts.
Modern striking - application of Jeet kune do. a subjective training system of no system that adopts to the physical and mental state of a student. Survival is the main goal. safety is the philosophy; false pride is the enemy. Science and realism is the bible. We should be smart rather than bold. we only become brave when we have to. be vigilant but guided. Anti limit, anti style, no way as way. |
