I just want to know your opinion on loyalty and its relevance to present day martial arts.
If you realized that the art that you've learned through long and dedicated practice has been compromised or misrepresented by your teacher, should you remain loyal to your teacher? or seek knowledge elsewhere in order to remain loyal to your art? Would it be appropriate to discuss these matters with your teacher? Where do you draw the line?
I would have to say both. If you feel something is wrong then seek knowledge else where. At the end of the day its you who will be having to defend urself BUT your teacher is that TEACHER he/she will have more experience etc. Difficult one
If you are having a problem with your instructors teaching methods or some other aspect of his curriculum then you should first go to him and discuss how you feel about it. It may be nothing but a misunderstanding or perhaps he sees your point of view and makes some changes. It depends on his response and whether you are sattisfied with it. If not then you should seek instruction elsewhere. Your main concern should be your growth as a martial artist. You determine what you want out of MA training and if he/she cannot provide it then go somewhere else. It's as simple as that.
Generally agree with what has already been said. I would like to add, that lineage means nothing. My teacher was this, his teacher was that. So What? Who are you, what can you do?
The other thing about lineages and how well preserved they are, is who cares? Is it effective today.
It's like I had this conversation with a guy who was doing wing chun. His teachers lineage was from Yip Man. But who was he, but someone who had a student who far surpassed him.
Too many teachers use the myths of their masters or some dude a thousand years ago as a reason for the greatness of what they are teaching. When teachers talk like this, it means they do not know the truth themselves.
I find that classical teachings of most MA instructors to give me gas. Ignorance dose as ignorance is. Its like alot of these instructors knowledge of the martials arts come from watching B movies. I think were both coming from the same place. It sound like your pretty fed up. I would look for a belt or certification somewhere that would mean something to you.

I suppose the other thing you have to ask yourself, is do you want to learn to defend yourself or do you want to learn B movie martial arts, I mean, classical martial arts with all its autheticity certificates.
If you want to learn self defence then ask yourself, can your teacher fight for real. If so then stick with him otherwise dump him. If you want the latter than you are going to find it almost impossible to find something that has not been altered in some way at some time.
Question everything, Know nothing.
