Has anyone trained in open hand kali? I incorporate the kali and the trapping along with sectoring hit parry at same time. I find that the three really compliment each other very well. trapping is centerline were the kali is zoning outside. Just wondering if i could get other people thoughts on this.
I'm a huge fan of Kali trapping, though I do think it should be combined with Jun Fan. By itself it's too passive, not as direct, and not as ballistic. Open hand hubud and sambrada are really great, help a lot, and are a lot of fun. Destructions kick ass. And I love the sneaky fighting style that is taught in Filipino Martial Arts.
Do you work the foot tapping in with your kali trapping. I dont know if you ever seen a steve grody tapes on open hand kali he has a great outlook on the foot trapping to the take downs. I do have to disagree asfar as the kali trapping being to passive. although your right about the two working together they are awsome.
Foot trapping has an extremely small place in my arsenal. I rarely do it, and I rarely see it or experience it actually working in full out sparring. Once in a while, when the oppurtunity comes up, but otherwise no. I prefer much more simpler and easier ways to take someone down.
Empty hand Kali is by far some of my favorite empty hand fighting. I have had alot of experience in this field studying panantukan w/ my Guro which is Filipino Dirty boxing. The guntings, limb destructions, and the trapping that comes from hubud and sumbrada etc... is all just what makes it so effective. Intertwined w/ the JKD and Silat (the foot trapping) that I believe you are refereing too comes from alot of the Silat side of the Filipino/Indonesian MA.
Being more or less passive aggressive is what I like, ive done some Wing Chun and learnt the center line theory but i prefer the 'zoning' that Kali entails.
I understand what you are saying it should be instinctual to beable to combined the two together are they not two diffrent approaches to get to main objective? There again it is all in the training method i believe correct me if i am wrong. I have been reading alot post on this forum and they for most part end up someone bad mouthing the other i hope this one continous the way it is going it is infomative wich i think that is the reason for the forum in the first place thanks for not bad mouthing any my questions or down grading me hopefully that didnt open up a can of worms. Sifu Lamar i know your not a concept guy but what are your feelings on open hand kali?
