Recognizing that, as members of the Family of Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do, we are united in the common goals of perpetuating the teachings of the founder, Bruce Lee, and promoting unity among instructors, practitioners and general members, all members agree to abide by the following code of ethics:
1. To always respect and protect the name and image of the Founder of Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do, Bruce Lee, and the art that he developed.
2. To have mutual respect for each member and to refrain from making any negative comments about a fellow member. If members have grievances with each other, these should be addressed in private or at a meeting of the Nucleus and not debated in a public forum.
3. To share philosophical insights and technical knowledge freely with each other in order to further enhance each person's efficiency in the art.
4. To be fully responsible for the actions of your subordinates - assistants, associates, instructors, and employees; to enforce a code of ethics that includes the guidelines set forth in this document. If a member has a problem with a student of another member, they are to bring it up with that member for redress.
5. To have respect for any other discipline a member may be involved in outside of Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do. In other words, if a member studies another martial art, their ability should be highly regarded; however, another art should not be referred to as Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do.

Being nice and respectful often leads to tolerance, which is dangerous in the martial arts. If you let people get away with not only practicing crap, but also spreading it through the venue of teaching, then you're sacrificing practicality for the sake of someone's feelings. If you know what you're doing, you can back up what you say both physically and verbally, (for the most part). If you DON'T know what you're doing, you hide behind terms like "mutual respect" and "open mindedness" and "spiritual enlightenment".
Keep in mind, my little rant ONLY refers to combat. If you study a martial art for the joy of it, then so be it. But don't talk about what works or doesn't work in a real fight and expect everybody to respect your opinion. Hey, maybe your opinion sucks? Ever think of that?
Ah, but how will you ever find out that you don't know sh!t unless someone calls you out on it? Answer: you won't, which is why 95% of the martial artists in this country couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag. Everybody's so busy "mutually respecting" each other, than the crap stuff is put on an equal plain with the good stuff, thus diluting the latter.
I HATE THIS "EVERYBODY'S OPINION COUNTS" CRAP!!! It's such bullsh!t. All men are NOT created equal. We may enjoy the same rights under the law, which is fine, but just because you have an opinion doesn't mean you deserve to be heard.
Hey! You don't inherently deserve a god damn thing! You have to EARN the right to be heard, at least when talking about/teaching/practicing combative training. Anything less is dangerous, because passing on nonsensical techniques might get somebody hurt or maimed or even killed.
I'm too pissed to go on, so I'm just gonna stop...
Consider that the only reason rules exist is because we do need a threshold of tolerance
Simply because people have no self discipline.
had we all been of like mind with a Good Concept of progression, Tolerance would not be an issue, simply put everyone's opinion would count because everyone would feel the same and would work the same.
But that is not the case.
Mike very deep insight, but do not be quick to anger my brother, anger is the snare of the ignorant, and causes us to folly in response.
I know you understand this, even though you think it sucks, it was never supposed to be fair bro, but that in it of itself is what allows us to grow, to not allow such folly consume us and us not be distracted by pure ignorance.
To observe and not react is a strength all its own.
Again Mike I respectfully disagree. You say that just because I have an opinion that I don't have a given right to be heard but as a human being I have earned that right. What I haven't earned is the right to be respected in that opinion. As people we have to exercise judgement and that is a lesson of life i.e. making the right ones. You're quite right I believe about there many con artists out there and that in the world of self defence/combat it is very dangerous but here also we have to exercise judgement, there are no shortcuts and to exercise that judgement people need experience.
Everyone's opinion should be heard, now accepted? that's a different matter in itself. Every opinion must be subject to examination for its validity, why kill off an idea before it has a chance to really develop? just a thought
Sooooo how do you know if you are one of the "chosen" whose opinion gets to be heard if you have never opened your mouth before and nobody knows who you are?
If everyone had the same opinion this would be a pretty boring forum don't you think? Everyone should be able to voice there opinion even though some are ignorant.
If everyone shared the same opinion, JKD wouldnt be in the state it was today, and our conversations would be about the latest developments and how we could improve on them as a whole.
Everbody has a right to voice their opinion. Whether or not it has credence is another matter, as well as whether we choose to listen to it, take it seriously, etc. People have a right to voice an opinion, but we also have the choice of disregarding that opinion(The Bush Administration being a fine example). If you don't like their opinion, fine. You can ignore it, insult it, correct if you want to try. But don't sit there and tell me that only a select people can voice their opinions, just because you disagree. While the bone-headedness of classical martial arts still exists, we won't stamp it out by stifling others' opinions.
So Ricky, you think it's better for everyone to agree on everything? You being into philosophy and all, I'd expect you to be the last person to think that everyone should be mindless robots that think and do alike (much like tradition).
I have no right to express my opinion on how to correct nitro valve regurge in a heart patient. Why? Because I don't how S H I T about cardiac surgery!!!
The above is a specific skill set that I have no practical knowledge in. Effective hand-to-hand combat is likewise a specific skill set. You either know it, or you don't. Such is martial skill.
Now, martial art is different, as it is indeed an art, and therefore subject to interpretative opinion. Naturally, so is actual street fighting, but to a much lesser degree. Heat surgery is the same, (as street fighting), by the way. Surgeons follow a very tried and true game plan, bur their individual techniques may very ever so slightly from doctor to doctor.
Does THIS clear it up? I'm not qualified to give an opinion on heart surgery, just as most of the people on this forum aren't qualified to give an opinion or what does or doesn't work in the street.
You can debate martial ART all you want, because art is subjective. But what the hell gives everybody the "right" to talk out of their ass about martial skill? Especially when newcomers come to this forum and swallow their crap hook, line, and sinker?
What really burns me, is that our country is becoming a nation of pseudo intellectual pussies. Oh sure, we've still got enough poverty stricken, undereducated morons to go around, but those that SHOULD BE leading, are raising themselves as wimps.
Everybody thinks they have the "right" to this and that... Says who, B I T C H?!?
When I was a kid, and I talked out of my ass, I got smacked. Why? Because my opinion DIDN'T count!!! I didn't have the experience, knowledge, or education to talk intelligently about certain things, and my parents didn't let me get away with being a know-it-all punk. Granted, I'm a know-it-all punk now, but that's only because I do indeed know it all.
Do ya smell what I'm stepping in? Your "rights" don't extend to spreading ignorance at the possible detriment of others. In a rational world, this would fall under common sense. But this isn't a rational world, and people want to receive the praise or attention without putting the work in. It's just like that kid who got on here the other day talking about JEEK Kune Do. He didn't know s h i t, and it was painfully obvious that he didn't know s h i t, and everybody blasted him on it.
Well, HIS case was obvious, but other cases are not so obvious, which is why I always put my two cents in when somebody talks about street fighting.
Just because you have an opinion, doesn't mean you have the "right" to express it, ESPECIALLY when you express it as fact.
Thats why when they DO express it as fact, you proceed to show them the error of their ways and beat their ass. And like I said before, just because they have an opinion to voice does not necessarily mean it has credence. Obviously you would not be able to know until they opened their mouths and spoke out. Thats what I am saying. I don't disagree with you on the matter you stated above. If you don't know dick about what you are saying, then you don't have a right to be spouting ****. But I can't help but point out that you will not know who is the ass-talker until you get a listen on what they are saying. Thats all.
