Hi there, this is my first post here. I was wondering, i'm starting MA in the next week or 2 and was looking for some advice on which to choose since both or these are available to me. (Also i have no previous MA experiance)
JKD or Ving Tsun? What do you think would be the most effective? Both on the street, and vs each other ?
Also is there a differance between "Ving" and "Wing" Tsun ? Or is it just a typo ? Quite confusing to me :S

Naz is right. You will want to investigate both, test the waters and see what you like. Its the only way you will really know. JKD classes will vary from instructor to instructor, especially if its JKDC. I do not know much abut Ving Tsun, so see for yourself what you like, and good luck with your training.
See weng shun kuen for same lineage and info on wing chun (YiP man). Find out what really happed how wing chun came to hong kong and the difference between weng shun kuen (same 3 form, pole form and butterfly knife). Get a real insite of why people debate the wing chun of the modern era.
Take JKD man! Well thats at least what I would take and am currently learning. Bruce is the bad assest Martial Artist on the planet. You should definatly learn his stuff!
It always comes down to two things. 1) the instructor 2) the student. So like Naz said check out both classes and see which is more realistic. Do not be afraid to judge, even if they can beat you.
Personally I think Wing Chun is ****e and by what you say I am assuming the JKD class is mainly Wing Chun I would suspect that it too is ****e. That is just my personal preference. Because Bruce Lee founded JKD it does not mean that by going to a JKD class or a Wing Chun class you will be able to fight like him or even truely understand freestyle.
As far as choosing between Ving Tsun and JKD, it's a tough call. Not every instructor is a great teacher and/or qualified to teach. It might be more helpfull if you give a little background info on the possible schools you wish to attend and the instructors qualifications. If they have webpages then links to those pages would be helpfull.
If not then the best way to tell which school is better is to go and observe a class. Pick the one that appeals to you.
you could choose one and then the other for as much a lenth of time as you feel like. I decided to train wing chun fo 6 years before moving onto JKD and (as far as I know!) it seems to work ok wihle training my wing chun I study JKD so as to lessen the shock on my fighting style.
remember to make the right choice if you only do one tho
when I began searching for a martial art system, I was drawn to western boxing because I had read Bruce had incorporated some elements of that into his jkd, yet when I tried it... I was discouraged because I was awkward and clumbsy, since I had no prior MA training. I found a wing chun school and joined because that was the closest thing to jkd at the time in m my area. years later, when I whent back to try boxing again ,it became much smoother and cordinated etc. I guess that is why Bruce taught siu nim tao to some of his begining students so they can start building some tools and a foundation, as he did. some peolpe beleave that at a future time Bruce realized that his wing chun training was a big asset in his developement as a Martial artist, and began to hold back some of his wing chun elements from his students. thats why after his death some jkd guys either whent back to research wing chun or got discouraged and dicided to dish sticky hand training and trapping all togetther since it is a skill that takes time to develope well. as some one mentioned above research and see what works best for you, as everyone is an individual case.
now that really is appalling. When I see the number of students watching and clapping to this, it makes me depressed that there are so many people being duped out there.
