Also does anyone have any tips for a more explosive punch?

I would ask myself what my goals were. Is it to be a JKD man a wing chun man, a martial artist etc. When you have established a goal then it is easier to answer your question. You see at the moment your question does not suggest what you are looking for. Self defence? spirituality? etc. None of these have nessarily got anything to do with what style of martial art you do. It has more to do with how you approach your training.
I have trained in Wing Chun and found it has helped me in my JKD training, but it is a matter of what type of JKD you are pursuing. Are you pursuing original JKD as Bruce Lee did or Concepts as Dan Inosanto does it. The Wing Chun will be more helpful in the original as it is based more on the Wing Chun. But either way I do not thing it will hurt as more knowledge of any kind is helpful to you as a person.
I believe studying Wing Chun is a good idea before moving to JKD.
My advise is to visit a JKD school in your area, from your first question I assume there is one.
I enjoy this Wing Chun.. like Philosophy, "when traveling unknown spaces, if you have only thoughts of your destination, then you have no thoughts to find the way." In other words learn no faster than to totally concentrate on what is being taught to you at the moment. When you learn what was taught, then the next thing will come and you will eventually find your way.

I have been playing around with the same thought...even to think that I would do both at one time. A couple days at one ...a couple at the other. It is all just mechanics.
I took WC for a while, and I really like the art....mostly because I found a great teacher (and I tried a few schools)....but I did feel there was something missing in all of the scools. Combat training. So i went to JF/JKD..to get a better workout, and get that reation speed that comes with realistic training.
After a while I found that even JKD can be too much. You only need a few tools to be effective in combat. So my plan is to train those tools as my JKD and then go back to WC for the pure love of it. Like a great game of chess. In the end I will be teaching both I am sure.
BTW some of the best WC people I have seen were already skilled JKD fighters, and were going to a root to taste it for themselves.

I have been training in Wing Chun for 5 years and JKD for 1. The thing that I have noticed that my WC training has helped me tremendously in JKD and JKD has helped me in my WC training. People ask me if I am a WC man or JKD man. I reply " I am just a man seeking to be better." You don't have to seperate yourself from WC. Of course to understand JKD better you need a qualified instructor, i.e. Patrick Strong, Lamar Davis, etc... As for the punch, the one thing that would make it more explosive is Fa Ching. Focus on developing Fa Ching and your punch will be explosive.
